Organic Soil Building vs Re-amending Commercial Soil

My point to this thread to get some local people and like minds together to share the same interests in creating a real living soil.
I'm curious to recipes, amendments, and other things you either make or purchase. Perhaps we can all assist and work together in improve things. Commercial soil is garbage and will also be part of the topic of discussion.

*Please note: Chemical and/or unsustainable bottled 'organic' is off topic and you will be politely be asked to leave. Indoor/Outdoor/Greenhouse are all acceptable environments for discussion.

**Any misinformation without scientific backup as in links from peer testing, academic books, and real info will also be required when posting not just " I heard it from my friend crap or the dude from the dro store".

Let's keep all cannamyths out.

Who here builds soil from "scratch" or from the ground up and what type of materials to you use?

I'm curious to recipes, amendments, and other things you either make or purchase. Vermicopost discussions and anything else natural to add is great.

This is a neat thread as well Cann, Rrog, and myself were pretty active in : https://www.rollitup.org/organics/636057-recycled-organic-living-soil-rols.html

I'm doing my part to spread the knowledge to the newbs in AZ especially. If this is really medicine it should be grown clean and natural, don't you think???? Who can argue with that? Be my guest.

Cancer patients shouldn't be smoking chems! People that destroy the earth will pay with karma. Heal the earth! and not destroy it.

Sourcing local AZ amendments. I have been wanting to find a local sources for all amendments I use. I think I may have fulpower/humic replacement but I'm working on testing currently. That would be the last "bottle" so to speak I'm using.

I started amending and mixing my own soils from scratch a while back and haven't looked back. The results have more than convinced me.

It's somewhat hard to find certain amendments locally though,at the moment I order rock dust, crab meal, oyster shell flour and neem seed meal online.I go to baker nursery on 40st between thomas and indian school and buy worm castings, compost and perlite,& pumice and some other amendments.

I also grow aloe vera and use weekly.Plants have responded so well to it I will never stop using it.

I would like to find a good source of fresh castings,I want to start a bin but just haven't had the time so if anybody has a local source?

Well headtreep my eyes were opened when I found the Rols thread in icmag. No more over priced bottles for me.

I've been asking the same Q to no avail.....it seems fresh castings are rare round these parts (metro Phoenix area) lol.....I seen a few ads on CL but have yet to try them out because the price was a bit high.

Well if somebody would capitalize, there is definitely a market for fresh castings.

Good man, Treep! I'm coming changing over to no-till ROLS, from SuperSoil. Looking forward to the new adventure and the new lessons I can learn from growing a "new" way (actually it's the oldest way, but it will be new to me!)

I'd be down to meet up and chat about this stuff, compare notes/process, etc, if you'd be willing to drop some knowledge and wisdom on me? Hit me up sometime!! Very soon I'm mixing up my soil to cook, so sooner the better. :)

just an fyi for anyone else that was on the lookout for good local castings - they now are carried at homegrown hydroponics! they have organic worm castings for $6/lb from a local supplier in phoenix, according to the suppliers website - www.vermilove.com - "The worms are fed certified organic produce waste to create the absolute best and most nutritionally dense vermicompost possible." so it should be quality stuff! it definitely seems fresh, nice and moist and has lots of little bugs crawling around in it... at first i wasn't sure if the little bugs were ok especially since some resemble the dreaded spidermite, but a quick google search reveals that lots of beneficial mites and other bugs are common in worm bins so it's just a sign of healthy castings as far as I'm concerned.

i never checked for them online cuz i don't like buying growing supplies off craigslist, and i'm not looking for a giant order of 100+ lbs like str8sativa mentioned, 1 lb is all i need for now and if i was to save more it'd just get all dried out and not be as good later on

no, i just needed a little for making compost tea. and the best castings are fresh castings so if i got more than a lb it would pretty much just go to waste

...i kinda reconsidered using craigslist after looking at the ad, I try to avoid getting hydro supplies or things that are marketed to mj growers from CL but this worm farm seems like a they're more of a traditional type of place advertising to regular gardeners in general as opposed to just mmj growers so I'm not as paranoid about them, I probably will go there to get bucketfulls of castings if/when i mix up another big batch of soil. especially since they're much cheaper than the 1 lb bags and prices would add up with those, only concern i have is they don't really tell you what they feed the worms but it's still gotta be better than what i used in my last batch of soil, which were bagged castings shipped from out of state and i don't know what those worms were fed either. So for a lot of castings i'd probably hit up cragislist but the 1lb bags at homegrown hydro are great for just brewing some aact.
