Ah yes, its that time of year again.
And for myself, after a move across state that means having to build a completely new setup! freakin sweet, right? After years of clandestine closet grows and nervous guerrilla outdoor ops, I finally have the space to play around that I have always wanted. unfortunatly I just dont have the budget to build that flooded tube concept ive been floating around inside my head, so this time, Im going to stick with what I know best and do another run or 2 with organic hotsoil. And just for shits and giggles, I was so intrigued by SICC's party cup grows, ive decided to see what one can do with a SOG of party cup sized plants!

The Beans!

Once again a hearty thank you to Speedyseedz for supplying the goods.

Currently I have germinated 33 beans, they did the ole 24 hour presoak and then went straight into the disposable NFT incubator. Those things work great, and cost like 10$ if you can find them out of season. Made by a co. called Burpee. I got mine at HD on clearance 2 years ago during the winter and its worked great for 3 germinations now, I will continue to use it untill the cheap plastic its made out of breaks, lol. But back to the Beans-

8 Aurora B reg, by The Flying Dutchmen
8 The Pure (Skunk #1) by The Flying Dutchmen
17 Dank ass bagseeds of a local strain that i happen to know is a cross between afghani landrace, pakistani landrace, and NL. not sure of the stability, but it produces some of the best locally grown nugs around here in hydro, so im curious how they will fair with some good ole organics feeding them instead of those nasty nutes.

I got 8/8 germination on the aurora B
I got 6/8 on The Pure. it would have been 7/8 buyt i think i might have killed one of them doing some prenatal surgery to remove a stubborn seed casing.
also got 14/17 on the bagseeds, though very uneven/unstable growth, lol surprise surprise on that one.

A breif glimpse of the beans in the incubator. i have removed the humidome, its a peice of crap and too small anyway, lol-

looks i little stretchy, huh? no worries, those cups are only an inch 1/2 deep! after there transport into some real soil, they will be just fine, exactly how i want them.

On to the cab-

The cab is going to be a 2 layer stack, the cabinet itself was actually going to be thrown away by a good buddy of mine. Jokingly, I said why would you throw that out? You could grow some serious dank in there, if you knew what you were doing. After a short convo, he bet me that the only thing that could be grown inside a pressboard walmart cabinet is mold! 500$ bet haha! what a sucker.... So not only did I score a free cab, im also going to get half a g here in a few months
I have decided to go with a 400w MH, and a 250w MH. both lamps are probe start M59 lamps found anywhere that sells HID lamps. I also have a 400w CMH but the ignitor shit the bed on my only pulse start ballast so instead of acting like a noob and running out and spending hard earned cash, ill just use what i got for now, after all this is a concept grow, not commercial. not by a long shot. so im going low low low budget. I will be utilizing the 'air curtain' style of heat removal. this is something i have not seen very much of here on RIU, so I will let my fuckups teach everyone else how to do it ;)

heres some pics of the cab under construction, i have more, but the ole lady took off with the camera so it will have to wait for the next update in a few days.

omg... what a peice of shit. the pic does it no justice as to just how bad of shape its in. i removed the doors for construction. andyep, im seriously going to use this peice of shit, just to prove a point-

a look through shot of the duct openings on the upper cab that will provide the air curtain-

the front, both 'decks' i think i will refer to them as decks, lol, i grew up around boats and ships ;)

ah, the secret to success in cabinet growing: labyrinth light traps for the supply and return ventilation.... they will actually be painted flat black. the nasty looking brown shit is a sealant i use to cover up all cut edges and exposed particle board from cutting and modding. I have learned the hard way just how fast RH can ruin a decent cab if you dont take the proper precautions.

And last but not least I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce the newest member of RIU- Rocky. Sorry about the mess in the background, lol, we were playing in the laundry, just to piss of the ole lady! He'll be handling security here in a few months :bigjoint:

I will post more pics of the cab and the lil girls after there first transplant here in a day or three.

Please feel free to post in this journal, I welcome any and all criticisms and insights.

so the gf is still hogging my camera. apparently posting pics of the new pup is more important than my journal.
today i mixed my soil, tommorrow i will be finish up the electrical controls on the cab, and will be transplanting.
pics and more info on soil mix when the ole ball and chain quits bogarting the cam.
theres alot to cover in my next update, it will take a damn hour to type it up lol.......

pics in a few hours..... been busy past week or so, lost a bunch of pics of the cab under construction too :(
my old mom and a bonsai clone i have had flowering for 3 weeks are starting to get frosty!

so the plan here is to get my grow up and running again.
that means establishing mothers, the whole 9.
out of the 33 germed, i got 29. not too shabby. coulda been more but oh well. lets hope for 29 bitches tho, lol.....
the control setup that runs the cabs... (yes, there are 2 cabs) im proud of myself for the design. it is capable of running as many cabs as i want or could ever need. im thinking of getting another one later on for mothers. but thats another journey that hasnt started yet.

So i lost about half the pics i had... a stoned old lady accidentally wiped the wrong memory card:wall: had some cool pics detailing the construction and light proofing of the new cab, but cant cry over spilt milk.

oh well tho, on to the update
ill start with some pics leftover from cab construction. heres the control rail before wiring ihas been installed. i have since added an additional 3 pole relay. everything is run by the 24vdc power supplies on the left hand. the larger supply powers the relay logic gate, and the smaller powers the LED nightlights i have in case i get to jonsin and have to eyeball my babies. this relay logic gate is capable of running an infinite number of cabinets from a single input. one timer runs it all. KISS ;) if so desired it is quite capabable of running staggered operation, in case i wanted to run 2 cabs onn and 2 cabs off, or any combination. sweet! its over kill tho but wtf, im an electrician! the addition of a simple cycle timer makes integration of hydroponics and co2 a cinch as well. each cabinet that can be run is designed to run of 15 amp 120v, up to 1000w of lamps if so desired. although i wouldnt put anything bigger than a 400w in any cab this small, due to heat issues. my fans scream right now with 400w on the lower level and 250w on the upper level, temps stay around 78 for the first 6 hours and start climbing towards 82-83 deg in the 12th hour of the cycle. this is with no a/c in the room, and it was 70 deg f the day i was taking measurements. good thing my control rail can also handle a/c operation!

and the controls fully wired up. the 3rd relay is kind of hidden due to the angle of the shot, but i wasnt dragging the cab out just for a pic. the damn thing is kind of heavy loaded up.

a 250w mag ballast, remote mounted.
note the plate shielding the wood pressboard panel from heat,(something else i have learned the hard way lol) and the stand-off mounts. this allows for air circulation and vibration isolation. mounting a mag ballast like this greatly prolongs its life.

here is the timer, controls, fans, 250w and 400w ballasts mounted on the side of the cab.
the light leaks you see is actual reflections from the other rubbermaid cab, which is not light proof at all, lol. the room is in complete darkness though @ high noon so its no biggie
gonna have to fix that leak at the bottom of the door tho! (i did... lol i shut the door all the way)

the 'upper deck' fired up for the first time. here you can see the air curtain principle- the left hand vent is the fresh air supply, the right hand vent is exhaust. this flow of air is centered on the lamp, exactly like a cooltube, but with no glass and pain in the ass flex duct. air volume is exchanged in the cab every 5 seconds, yet at a speed which is a gentle breeze to the plants. the cooling fan (its not a pc fan. its actual an industrial cooling fan for use in small plc control cabinets. 24vdc) shoots some cool air across the bottom of the lamp to prevent burning of tops that grow to close before i can train them, or move them to the lower deck, which is 8 inches taller than the upper deck. the unistrut not only acts as a heat sheild, but also gives me the ability to swing the lamp vert if i so desired. i dont plan on it, but i figured why not? better to have than to have not. i like modular design. it also holds the green led nightlight. underneath the cooling fan is the temp sensor. when it gets hot in the summer the temp sens will kick on the room a/c at whatever temp i set it too. you can hardly see it due to the shadow cast by the fan, but its the somehwat blurry dark grey box under the fan lol. nice interference pattern... who says quantum physics cant be proven :p

the lower deck (400w)

a better shot of the cooling fan and temp sensor

the final light leak check. the new cab is that black hole on the left :D as you can see, a properly sealed and light proofed pressboard cab is superior to rubbermaid, any day of the week, imho

night lights! they only come on when i want them to... hopefully never ;)

heres both cabs in operation. the rubbermaid cab is something i threw together in like an hor one night after i moved, lol, and it shows. that little fan is 240v though, and theres 2 of them sucking, i dunno what the cfm is but its like a hurricane in there. the plants seem to love it though under that 400wCMH (got my ignitor finally :D) and 100w cfls. temps stay about 1-2 deg above room temp.
it was a pain in the ass to take this pic. you chouldve seen me balancing on the back of a couch with cam in one hand and joint in the other, all for your viewing pleasures and criticims. the plan here is to get some mothers established, and start cloning. youngest set of clones go in the upper deck. teenage clones go in the lower deck. fully stretched bitches go into the 2nd cab for finishing. similair to Al B Fuct's 16 sq ft 4 tier rotation system, except with 3 tiers. i wanted four, but just didnt have the space or another cab. the seedlings here were transplanted out of the incubator just 2 hours before these pics, still elaning and stretchy. we'll seem in a few days if they stiffen up. there already liking the HID though vs the t8's i had them vegging under tho, they are already starting to turn into the lamp.

babies in the upper deck. 13 bagseeds yo ho ho... maybe ill fond something worth cloning, who knows? always the fun part about bagseed. you just never know! 2 hours after transplant.

the lower deck. on the left are 8 aurora B, and the right is 7 the pure (skunk #1) and the best looking bagseed. 2 hours after transplant

and finally some pics of the 2 bonsai moms. on the left is local strain (pakistani/afghan/NL#5) on the right is some type of super skunk x haze. 21 days in from showing sex

stemage

a little baby bud porn for all you pot pedophiles out there. shame on you... but you cant help yourself, can you? how disgusting! go ahead, look anyway you perv:bigjoint:

the p x a x nl. i like to call it yocal local lol

the ssh cross- the sativa lineage is strong in this one, flowering quite a bit slower than the other but i know she'll be worth the wait. this particular mom provided the clones that go into my special stash

look at those lil nugs, all frosty at 21 days... they havent even finished stretching so im excitied. i never intended to flower these plants but shit happens, im curious what the final product will be. no doubt these lasies are mature, over a year veg lol.
money shot!

and heres one of the aurora b babies, 24 hours after transplant. you can tell i waited a lil long to transplant them, its starving for N and a trifle stretchy. itll be ok though... i got just the ticket for that, but thats next update........

till then

oh yeah... you should know that i use the word 'dank' alot in these posts... lol. dank is a big word aorund here, and i hate it.... but i hear it soo much its rubbing off me. Lord, spare me for living surrounded by idiots, and give me the patience and wisdom to hide the bodies of those caught trespassing

hit the babies with there first dose of nutes tonite, 5-1-1 alaskan fish emulsion. 1/4 strength. might be a little strong.... but time will tell.
buds on the moms are coming along nicely, i hit them with a heavy dose of 10-20-10 last night, and they loved it... i will hit them again with it next feeding.
pics next update, nothing spectacular to report.

just happened to be in the room when the timer went click.... lol

things looking nice. i promised pics, but theres really nothing new to put a pic on.
seedlings have taken on rather nicely to the cab. i think i mixed my soil a tab on the hot side tho as i got some mild curling on some leaves, nothing tragic.
you can tell there really going nuts with the root growth at this point in time.

i am currently considering a hempy-hybrid type setup. i was fooling around earlier in the room and there was an empty styrofoam 16z cup. it happened to fit like a champ around the bottom of my pots.... thinking about making the rainage holes in my pots bigger than they would normally be and then filling up the cup w/ perlite vermiculite mix (75/25) and making a mini hempy contraption... similair to a self-watering bucket. im always worried about my soil drying out from the airflow anyways.

some bud shots of the two in flower
having a hard time showing the budsites in the lower half of the plat, due to shadows. these ladies are thickening up rather nicely. bout halfway through on the local yocal variety and 1/3 of the way on the skunk

oh yeah, gave the two bitches a partial flush last night after notcing some curling going on some of the leaves. they look happier tonite :bigjoint:
next feeding in a week i will hit them with some 10-20-10 to replace what was flushed out.... apparently the flush was long overdue, the initial runoff looked liek watered down cofee lol

you can see the curl in some of the above pics.

you can already tell the difference good genetics make:

old moms, 28days

random undercanopy peek, local yocal... bad lighting

let me turn that flash on- same cola :bigjoint:

the little super skunk. this plant will run a good 3 weeks longer than the local yocal, however 3 rips of her and your couchbound for 5 hours and eating ceral out of the box... well worth the wait lol

undercanopy peek at the superskunk-

and while i was moving a big ole fan leave out of the way on the local yocal, i found this hiding underneath it, bonus! it was a hidden side shoot of a side branch

:weed: yummy!

watered the babies bottom up today.
i think i will do this more in the future. simply flooded the cookie sheet trays ( i know, high tech ebb and flow :D ) with 1/2" of water, plants drank it up less than 5 mins.
i like the concept of this, keeps me from gouging ruts in the soil when watering from above... which is a pain in the ass with seedlings. im thinking it will make overwatering a thing of the past... and keep moisture levels even in every pot, as opposed to guestimating each pot by soil weigh, finger test.

Nice cabinets Bro! I plan to simplify Mine by simply cloning and mothering in a 4' cube I'll be making from ply wood. + rep keep it up bro, when I get started I'll be sure to send you a link.

i was looking at my pics in this thread and realized something was wrong!

i had my cmh in the wrong cab! lol
luckily the modular design made swapping the ballasts a less than 5 min job. 8 screws, and 4 wirenuts :p
note to self-
stop smoking joints during the builds! :eyesmoke:

welcome aboard!

ill post some more pics in a bit. no drastic changes but I want people to see the difference between the canopies on the good genetics and the canopies of the bagseeds.

Nice and stealth. do you ever had problems with landlords?
I have been lucky in the past with landlords in that I was clever enough to not get caught.
I would never put a cab like this in a rental property... begging for problems.

wish i had some pics of some of my old closets tho to share with you... pretty elaborate stealth.

genetics.... though anyone with a grow or 3 under there belt can tell you that it is possible to grow some killer bud from random bagseed, if your going perpetual you need to have an idea of what your working with, and thats where professionally developed strains really make the difference with killer buds, high potency and over all better yields. but most importantly, it is stable growth.
stable growth is critical for a perpetual grow... without it having multiple sets of plants in various stages of flowering is next to impossible.
nevermind different phenos growing side by side.... it will drive a man insane watching perfectly good indica dom ladies getting choked out by sativa doms... and im not even going to discuss the difficulties of nutes to maxmize a random crop.

for this grow i have 2 sets of proven genetics developed by a professional breeder in holland, and 2 sets of very very good bagseed from a local strain, but not professionally developed. all 4 sets of plants will recieve close to identical treatment. i will make slight nute adjustments if i think it needs to be done, but nothing drastic. the difference in genetics is already painfully obvious-
on the left the pure, the right aurora b

canopy- note how even the growth is, even with 2 diff strains side by side. you cant find a plant that varies in height by more than 1/2"
remember thats 16 plants your looking at!

canopy footprint, the pure on the left, aurora b on the right-

bagseed canopy-

bagseed footprint- you can see there all pretty healthy but growth is erratic as hell, all over the place, and different phenos too.. suckage. luckily for me ive worked with this strain for a long time and know which pheno to select beforehand... and its not the one that yields the most weight... but the one that packs the most punch ;)
