Poll: Michigan voters would back medical marijuana law again

GRAND RAPIDS – A recent poll showed that Michigan voters would again approve the state's medical marijuana law.

The poll, conducted by Marketing Resource Group, Inc., showed that 59 percent of voters would approve the law, while 35 percent would not. Two percent leaned toward approving, while 2-percent leaned against.

The poll results were announced by Marijuana Policy Project, which helped draft the law. In November 2008, 63-percent of voters approved medical use of marijuana.

“This poll proves that a strong majority of Michigan voters stand firmly behind the compassionate medical marijuana law they enacted two years ago,” Karen O’Keefe, director of state policies for the Marijuana Policy Project and lead drafter of Michigan’s medical marijuana law, said in a statement.

The law has spawned controversy, including multiple lawsuits. Just last week, a federal judge in Grand Rapids ruled that Joseph Casias, who used medical marijuana for a brain tumor, was not protected by the law when fired by Walmart for violating its anti-drug policy.

Another case is pending here: Can the federal government obtain confidential patient information from the state as part of a drug investigation?

No matter how many people approve of the medical marijuana law, a small vocal minority, without
any proof what so ever can get a newspaper to print blatant lies like, voters were duped, misinformed,
or didn't understand what voting yes to people being allowed to possess, grow, and smoke medical marijuana actually means.
It's even worse when you look at some of the city councils using those same lies as reasons to ignore the law.
I've read a bit on what the feds are doing, or trying to do. With the aid and blessing of the new Michigan AG by the way.
A few cases have already been stricken down in other states. Oregon is one of them i believe.
It's a shame justice is so slow. Especially when you know you're on the right side of the law.
It is now time for the courts to prove that the system of government we go to war and kill for
is legitimate, or if it's all just bullshit. As well as inform law enforcement of their jobs,
which is not to interpret, but uphold, and ENFORCE the laws, and not their own personal morality code.

I am glad to see this. I heard the other day on a news program that a majority of Americans just really don't give a hoot about marijuana use either way. Even if it was legalized you would still have that minority that would be against it. Just like there are people that are against drinking and smoking. I think Probo24 hit it on the head. Now the justice system and law enforcement are just trying to push on us what they think is right and what they know best, the voters have deemed their policy ineffective and demanded a new system put in place. It will still be a decade before law enforcement starts to get used to the idea that marijuana is a medicine. I would want a pot head driving around rather than a person on opiates or muscle relaxers or something... Yet abuse of corporate perscription drugs is still looked over. Daily people take a regimen of pills that 20 years ago a doctor would have screamed, "WHAT ARE YOU PUTTING IN YOUR BODY!"

Look where the money comes from to set policy.
The pharmaceutical money that backs politicians drives them, not the poor
huddled masses who vote to voice their will.
Marijuana would tear into the professional drug market share too much to allow.
I do believe even the drug cos. may see the writing on the wall for the legalization of marijuana.
And as any good business, they seem to be diversifing before the market opens up.
They're now starting to cater to your sick and diseased pets like never before.

we dont want full legalization, I cant say it enough. wonder why it didnt pass in cali, as soon as its fully legal we are all out, full legal means no more growing, you'll have to buy from a pharmacy, and big corporations take over monsanto already owns 50,000 acres in the emerald triangle waiting for it to go legal.

on another note I dont know if this is hersay or truth but i've heard their (mi) is going to try to weed out growers and make us buy from a small amount of cargivers like 20 across the state so theres no more in house grows
