Pot sizes?

First time grower using soil. How many different pot sizes do i need? When i buy the baby clone from the dispensary to when it is fully mature. How many times do i have to transplant it to a different size pot? I want to buy all the pots now so im ready when the time comes.

It really depends on how big your plant is going to be, what space you have, etc.

To keep things simple you can get whatever final pot you plan to have your plant in and just start it there. You need to take precautions to avoid over-watering when done this way though. I find a nice size progression of pots helps form your root ball though. I start with solo cups, move up to a half gallon, one gallon, two gallon, and finally three gallon. I've found by starting in the smaller pots it's harder to over water your plants and it's easy to ensure nice roots. When transplanting if you do it right you will never hinder or hurt your plants at all and they will keep on growing.

I tend to agree with Cyrus- I started with rapid rooters from seed, moved to a solo cup, to a half gallon, to a gallon, and now in 3 gal.

From a seedling in a 4" pot I transplanted into 2 quart then into their final 5 gallon containers. I usually bought pots from local nurseries and sometimes from ebay.
Some guys use 7 gallon pots and that's good too. The more root run they have the better

Dixie cup straight to your final pot size. some people think plants are stupid and they have to fill a smaller pot with roots so they can transplant them into a bigger pot to it fills with roots then do it again . I am not a scientist but I think a plant knows how to grow roots with out peoples help . look out side all the green growing never transplanted .lol

One month per gallon = 3 gallon pot
You will be able to get the average 3 month grow done fine with that sized pot. One more thing, you should transplant as infrequently as possible. I start in 2" x 2" rockwool cubes, and once the plant is 2 weeks old, it goes straight into it's final home. Also, the cola in my avatar is a 5 week bloom, 5 week veg total from seed, in soil, in my basement, in a 3 gallon pot doing 1 transplant, so it works. Good luck

I use nursery pots. My progression is a little more aggressive.

I go from rooters to 4" squares, then to 1 gallon squares or pots. Then 2.5 or 3, then ultimately 5 to 10.

This is how I handle all my plants (Food, weed, and otherwise). If they're bound for the raised bed, they never make it past the 4" squares.

you can go what ever way you want i have many times potted rooters into 15-20 litre pots and had excellent results. In my experience i have noticed if you gradually pot up allowing the roots to fill out the stages of pots you will get more explosive growth and my best yielders have been plants potted up over stages. However if i only plan on 2 1/2 - 3 weeks veg i normally just go straight into final pots but as mentioned if going into final pots be carefull not to over water, as the roots will only really grow hunting for moisture when the roots need so keeping the big pot too wet will stop the roots from packing out the medium.

Your answer will be somewhere in between all the responses but up-potting at least a couple of times will promote better root balls so highly reccomended. Personally my typical is Party cup -->1gal -->3gal -->5 or 7gal.

Nice sentence.

Lots of right answers here. But i am in the "transplant as infrequently as possible" crowd. From riot rooters to party cups. To one gallon than the final 5 gallon.. im interested to know if i can go straight from the party cup to the 1 gallon grow bag.
