i just read if i use peat moss then i need to use lime? is that true. im makin this much more complicated then needs be!
would just
castings, perlite, bone and blood meal work for a good mixture??? if so whats the measurements?
The reason people say to add lime to peat moss is because it can make your soil mix very acidic. Last grow, my peat-based soil became so acidic that I had to harvest a bit early before the plants died. Lime raises the pH. However, commercial lime often contains a lot of trace chemicals, so you get a little extra something if you shop around for the right one.
As far as the mix, there are plenty of soil mix formulas in the GrowFAQ. You could scale down Subcool's "Super Soil" as well. I think the Super Soil is a concentrate though, so don't throw plants straight in it. Otherwise, I'm sure there are directions on using the ingredients as a soil amendment on the bag. I think you should add some peat, coco, or something else, though. The soil mix you are describing sounds really hot, and will probably burn your plants. Oh, and I want to say that a little goes a long way with Blood Meal. That stuff is no joke. It will burn your plants. The smell of it also makes me gag. Maybe you will be able to stand it. Also, if you can get a hold of a little high-phosphorous bat guano, it will treat your plants well.
So, there are a couple suggestions. I am still learning the art of organic soil mix through trial and error, so don't take my word as unarguable truth. I hope you get it all sorted out!
