President Trump to directly target cartels

This is huge. Cartels have completely changed the landscape in Mexico, the US, and beyond. Perfect example is a place I regularly visit family (Cuernavaca) in just 10 years went from a relatively safe city with countless clubs and social settings to a city where the nightlife has almost completely disappeared.

A personal friend had a bar for less than a year before a cartel started taxing him, prostituting from it, then finally a full on battle between the 2 primary cartels in Cuernavaca took place in the plaza his bar was located. Multiple fatalities and the entire plaza (it is 2 story with roughly 10 businesses) was shut down.

It is encouraging to see this be one of his first directives as so many Americans are dying from cartel drug trafficking and an unknown number of adults and children are sent throughout the region in both the US and Mexico for abuse/sex work.

It always seemed odd to me we can send billions of dollars and spend thousands of lives across the world but leave such an unstable and dangerous environment directly to our south.

I truly hope Mexico benefits from this just as much or more. It’s a beautiful country that’s been corrupted by the drug war and certain private interests

There is only one legal gun store in all of Mexico.

there is a paywall for that article.

speaking from experience .38 caliber is the limit for legal ownership in terms of handguns. There are shotguns and hunting rifles (very restricted) allowed. The Mexican populace is at the mercy of the cartels and easily corruptible police forces as cartels do not follow gun laws

I used an incognito browser - no paywall.
The article suggests that many (70 - 90%) of the guns in Mexico come from the US - 250k to 1m/y.

Doesn’t surprise me at all. All the more reason to strictly monitor the border and border crossings.

Although in recent years the Mexican made FX-05 has found its way into the arsenals of cartels as well.

Yea something definitely needs to be done,I just know there dug in deep everywhere with everyone. Politicians, people we don't even see. Money is going to be a problem with telling the truth. At least it's a start though,to designate them as terrorists. Should of happened so long ago.

I'm just glad he got rid of all that white collar crime.
It appears he is already started to address that too.

Starting with the corruption in our government institutions. No more FDA to Big Pharma/Big Food cushy job offers is one I saw mentioned yesterday.

Although now that you bring it up, to keep it on topic, I wonder how much this new intentional dismantling of the cartels will expose members of the Mexican government (possibly even their new president) along with actors here in the US that are in the network

That's just it. What he and his team - Ramaswamy, RFK, Elon, claim to want to do is against the majority of the 1%. Which as my democratic friend said to me(I'm center/right leaning), "We need to remember it's not Democrats vs Republicans - it's us vs the top 1%".

I believe Trump and his team is being genuine, but whether they can accomplish even half what they say will be impressive and positive change IMO.

Elon Musk has multi billion dollar contracts with the US government, can you see the conflict of interest?

What is it that makes you believe Trump is beinig genuine?

Hasn’t this been tried for the last 40 years. Something called the war on drugs, I should know lol. It didn’t work lol.

I’ve spent a bit of time dealing with Mexicans years ago and never had an issue, not saying you can’t get in a shit storm. I’ve had friends get squeezed by government and untouched by cartel, the town I stay in is cartel controlled and very little crime takes place due to them not wanting to deal with the bad press that follows :(. We tend not to wander though lol.

Lmao! that is one fantastic example of a waste of efforts that only worsened the problem. I'm 33, but I hear old dogs in my town and family bar say all the time - "ya know shit was fine when people just smoked pot and did cocaine"
