Pure Carbon as a Filter?

I have a question about using carbon to filter the exhaust air from my small grow. I was going to try and make a carbon filter but as i was thinking could i just cut a hole in the pure carbon i bought, attach the exhaust fan pipe to the hole, drill holes in the bottom of the carbon container and just have the air kinda filtering through it? Would that kill all smell? And then when the carbon went bad i could easily just buy the same container of carbon and just replace it? i have made a picture that i hope will help you guys understand my idea better

Carbon works off surface area so a million pebbles is more effective then a solid block with that said I'm sure it would have some effect on oder but would it be noticeable i doubt it
