Question about suspicion...

a few friends of mine had a terrible roommate for a few months. He was a huge idiot and ran a bright orange extension cord out to their separate garage. Now they're a suspected grow house even though there was nothing like that going on.

What are some legal channels they could go through to get that removed. The cops are asking the neighbors about them and it's making them look bad. Would a lawyer help?

i doubt that you can do much to hinder a police investigation
that would be the official 'view' anyways
but if they're clean, could always invite the police to stop by and look
many here will not like that idea

I suggested that they give that guys information to the cops and explain they kicked him out for using his garage to grow. Even though I'm pretty sure he wasn't.

now you will want to be careful about that kind of info
ratting out an idiot may sound reasonable, but that could lead to grief
for one thing, they could be implicating themselves about knowledge of a crime being committed
that is in itself a crime, doubt police would bother with playing hardball, but they could
not a reputation you want to have

Don't snitch.
he's not the kind of guy that should be out in society. He's a huge douchebag. unfortunately it's not illegal to be a terrible human being.

Well, it's a recent development. I think if they act quickly (and get a lawyer) they should be able to remove suspicion with a voluntary inspection of the premises, and without getting into more legal trouble. at least that's the idea.

anyone have information on how long they'll keep investigating even if they don't find anything?

the cord is down and the roommate is gone. but that doesn't immediately end the investigation.

Cops investigate people all the time, they can't eat doughnuts 24/7 but if it's not a grow op who cares? My neighbors think I'm a hippie biker... oh wait...
Like the shirt says "Snitches are a dying breed" , be careful if he's that big a douchebag.

It would seem you are the douche!!! U say a cord was seen, oh my call the cops, idiot! And nothing was actually going on, oh my lets be afraid, you are a dumb ass and stop wasting peoples time with this type of nonsense!!! Police could not do a damn thing even if there was something going on!!! Probable cause, It is hard I know but it is what has to be shown to a judge to get a warrant and you can contest the warrant after the service if they find nothing or even if they find five hundred plants. You are wasting space on this planet.. Remember you said nothing was actually going on so what the f is your issue?? Are you a shut in and trying to make friends? this is not the way to do it.... Sorry but that is just so stupid. Hey they saw me take a bag of dirt into a shed and now they think I have dirt in my shed so should I be scared of a swat raid?? WOW....!

What legal trouble moron???? The cops have better things to do... How many detectives do you think are watching?? maybe the whole police force.. You know how exciting an extension cord is to the cops.. They will call the national gaurd and say you are a bad bad boy and give you a spanking. I know go hire a lawyer for 5k and make sure you don't get into trouble by doing nothin illegal as you say.. How stupid can people get.. Get offline and go seek professional help because if either of you monkeys are for real you are in need of some anti psychotic medications...... Scary how stupid people can be. Don't like my comments well sorry but this is just so so so stupid.....!

This is the idiot that said "more legal trouble"! And what do you think I missed?? Oh is it there huge important reputation that is at stake? Are they pillars of society? will the club cast them out for what an idiot thinks? No one cares is the point. Not the cops, not the people on here, and no one else in the world. No one is investigating that crap and I would love for the cops to seek a warrant or investigate me for something such as that, I would have a complaint and be in front of the court that issued the warrant so fast and brother they would have some hell to pay... Your honor we see an orange cord and would like to invade a home to check it out, ok here you go officer, take all the warrants you like and I will go pick up trash because I won't have a judge job soon.. Morons.. They could not get a warrant if you had a big sign on your roof that said I grow weed!! Dude how stupid!!!! Just would love to have them come raid my tomato grow because of a light in a garage.. Heard the word lawsuit???? Constitutional right to privacy... Like I said what did I miss?? and again had to say how stupid these monkeys must be, or bored... Could not care less but Hate the fact that some people are allowed to give birth...

@ Spanishfly - no question or hesitation I would take busted over snitching. Not tricky at all, jail is better than dead.

okay. Obviously there's been some kind of miscommunication. The responses to this thread have been largely ridiculous.

To clarify:
My original request was for proper legal channels for them to go through to end this investigation.
The reason I ask is because they worked hard for this house (nice place. kinda pricy.) and in the course of this investigation they interviewed their neighbors. A few of those neighbors have sent them letters and one lady even knocked on the door asking them to move out.

I would also never suggest to my friends that they submit a false affidavit. The ex roommate is a drug dealer. That was the reason he was asked to leave. He didn't grow or manufacture but he procured and disseminated. I think anyone that sells meth to children (srsly 13 and 14 year olds) should probably be in jail. That's just my opinion though. And because of that, I went ahead and called the cops and gave them his info myself. So if there's any repercussions it will be on me and I'm more than capable of taking care of myself. His idea of being a "badass" is a large rusty machete replica with a completely flat blade edge.

Also, any time you plan on dealing with law enforcement and the judicial system, you want a lawyer or some kind of legal advocate present. Even if you are completely innocent. A few of my family members are lawyers and although I've avoided jail the 27 years I've been alive without calling in any favors, I've learned that a lot of cops just want the confession.

Thank you to those that offered actual advice on how to proceed with this situation. They, nor myself, have ever been involved in something like that and I assumed, based on the context, some people would have some information regarding the best way to proceed.

To those who threw a tantrum and spouted pejoratives for no apparent reason: While I understand this is the internet, and flaming is something to be expected, this is a grown up discussion. Why don't you go play some xbox or, even better, get hooked on phonics?

and before it comes back to bite me in the ass, I know what I said earlier. I did tell them it's a terrible idea to lie to the cops. We had a good laugh about the whole situation and I instead took care of that part myself without revealing my identity and without lying.

how do you know it's a "suspected grow house"? Did the cops come knocking on the door asking if you were growing something illegal?

Also, why worry if there is nothing illegal. Let the cops come if they want, they will not find anything if what you said is true.

And why would an extension cord mean it's a suspected grow house? I have an extension cord going to my shed to charge the battery in my electric start walk behind mower. Lots of people do things like that. This whole thread is just ridiculous.
