Question for the Lighting Experts

OK...I have a PL Midi Reflector with a 400 watt bulb. Here's a picture:

My question is the placement. I have a 14 hole tray that fits on top of two 2X3 reservoirs. Currently, the length of the bulb runs with the length of the tray. I've had it like this for all my past grows. I think I read somewhere, however, that the length of a reflector should run with the width of the table. The reflector itself is almost (but not quite) the same dimension on all sides. Is there truth to this? Should I change the orientation so that the bulb cuts across the more narrow width...will I get that much more lumens over the rectangle? Or is it fine the way it is?

The reason I ask is that I now have eight or nine plants that are all centered in the "middle holes. I would like to spread the plants out so that there is more room for the early flower stretch and branch. They are getting crowded but I don't want the ones on the ends to receive appreciably less lumens. I may be swiitching out my res today or tomorrow. So if I have to do maintenance, now is the time.
Thanks for your thoughts and/or advice and suggestions!!
