question regarding watering coco seedlings

hi everyone. im about to start my first grow which i will be using canna coco. im a little stuck on the seedling process. im germinating some belladonna seeds as we speak using the paper towel/ ziplock bag method (i know i shoulda just sown them into the dirt but being my first grow i was a little uneasy about doing so) and now 7 of the 10 i germed have a nice big tap root and are ready to be put into coco. (after about 48hrs of being in the paper towel)

my question is before i transfer the seed into the coco do i water the coco till i see some run off then just make sure the top layer of the coco dosent dry out by misting as needed.

or do i pre-water it in a tub then sqeeze out some water to make sure its not too damp. and as the top layer starts to dry out mist as needed?

i read less is more in the seedling process and that i dont wanna over water or it could cause alot of issues. which i wanna avoid.

any help on the subject is greatly appreciated. let me know if you need more information as well. or if i did a crap job explaining the question:)

EDIT: sorry forgot to ask also if i should use the party cups i bought as they're first containers or should i stick em in the 6" pots to start. or will the 6" be loo large at this stage.

Hey mdyw, sounds like you got it under control.. nothing wrong with popping the seeds that way, I never put my seeds straight in coco, for me some paper town and a plastic container...

I use plastic party cups, cut a few holes, fill with a coco/perlite mix (70/30) and water.. do not squeeze any moisture out as this will compact the coco and make it harder for the roots to penetrate... also there is very simply no need to do this, overwatering is hard in coco unless they are sitting in water. I then make a small hole and insert the seed tap root naturally pointing down, cover with abot 2-3mm of coco and then mist slightly. From there I mist once every 1-3 days depending on the temps and moisture level, you want to keep it damp when they're young IMO - I don't cover my seedlings or enclose then in any way (only clones). Once the seedlings are about 2" I start a very low nute mix of about 140ppm, and work up to 280 the following week and see how they go from there! Hope you have a great grow! TTK

thanks alot for your information. sounds pretty much like what im doing. everything is going quite well at this time. all seeds are sprouted out of the dirt and 7 of the 10 have they're first leaves (Cotyledons) only problem was that i planted 2 seeds in 1 cup. ugh hopefully they will survive long enough to clone them.

I would germinate your seeds via the paper towel method first.. Coco coir is like a sponge and it will retain lots of water which could lead to problems with your seedling. Once you have your germinated seedling put it in a small pot or a red party cup is perfect. I always put my cuttings / seedlings in a plastic cup with some holes at the bottom. With in a couple weeks you will be ready for transplant into your big pot and you wont have to worry about over watering issues.. Remember seedlings are the new born babies of the plant world they should be treated that way too.
