To make it short, I have a medical marijuana prescription in California(expires 6/2009). If I join the military will I be able to have security clearance, the job I want has it as a requirement. I don't have anything on my criminal record, but am wondering because marijuana is illegal under federal law. I know there is a few prior service guy's here and I know there are many smart people who know how to find the answer. Please help me out, thanks!

I am soon to be retiring from the military. If you don't pass the drug test, you won't be re-enlisting. If you do pass the test, the questions they ask prior to enlistment (if you answer honestly) will reveal your history and I doubt you will be enlisted. If you pass the test, lie on the questions, the security clearance back ground check will get you.
In short, I doubt it unless your last use was years ago and it was "experimental" use.

I am not worried about passing a drug test, i am worried about them seeing that i used marijuana and had a prescription for it.

Problem solved, spoke with a friend of mine who is currently a recruiter and he told me as long as I didn't do a livescan, or fingerprinting no one will know. Plus I called the office were I got my prescription and they guarantee a 100% confidentiality.

Ummm, first off let me clue you in on something....recruiters are exactly what they sound like ... recruiters... they will say almost anything to get you to sign that paper. Once you are in, you're in and they are onto the next target.

They'll never know? You just told them......

I guess you did not read the part where I mentioned that the recruiter is my friend, has been for seven years. Let me clue you in on something, not all recruiters are what you perceive them as, get a clue.

Okay, I apologize, I didn't see where he was your friend, but I will stand by my interpretation of recruiters....they are not much different from used car salesmen....
either way if weed is a no no for your security clearance, no state prescription is going to trump the armed services requirements.

You'd best keep it to yourself...if they find out you lied later on, they'll bounce you down and make you change light bulbs for the rest of your enlistment.... so be careful and tell no one else.

Of course college is always the better option..... unless you're poor.

I don't think they can find that you're a MMJ patient through a background check... The doctors don't report your information to anyone, just an answering service that confirms whether or not you're a patient. That's as far as it goes... If you have a county card on the other hand, that may be reported.

Yeah, the ones I've met sort of are like used car salesmen... Except for you don't get a car, you get the possibility of losing your life in a nonsensical 'war' that can never be won. So I guess they are more like Dr. Kevorkian if they are "offering a product or service"

Exactly.... they will tell you ANYTHING to enlist. I had my run ins with them .. unbelievable .. it's funny now...

It's a great place to get cash for College, but you trade off your independence to get there. I can still remember seeing this girl on TV complaining about having to go to war a few years back. She just signed up to get an education...... read the fine print dear... ur ass is theirs in every way ... and I do mean in every way. If you get sacrificed or put in harms way, it's not your call, that's why they have to break you down mentally first. Also why they are only interested in the young, at least for the front line.

I can't see any reason to join the service other than getting an education later. At least as far as enlisting goes.
Officer training is another matter altogether.....that's a career.

I'll be done with city college in June and I'm not poor, most people do not join because of the incentives. I'm doing it to serve, that's something you probably won't understand.

I understand and appreciate it..... but you are what is called anecdotal evidence. Admissible but of little weight.

If incentives are not needed for recruitment quotas ... why do they have them? Kindness?

Yes, confidentialality is supposed to be assured with MMJ card in Cali. That's what I was told when I got mine, I don't see how anyone would know..Best of luck..

Only if you have the california state card will it possibly end up on the background check?

Recomendations from doctor falls under the doctor-patient priveledge and no one can see that.
