Root rot?

A brown "sheath" covering roots living in a dwc. Similar in consistency to wet tree bark. It easily peels off. Under the sheath, the root is lighter, brighter, and closer to white than the sheath, but it is still a mix of white and brown. Not a pure white. When viewed at 100x a root actually looks very similar to unfinished wood, Very uniform structure. In fact, what is the difference in structure between the root and the trunk? Contrast that with the mystery growth which looks "crystalline" when viewed at 100x. When the crystalline outer structure is viewed at 100x there are also small white insects visible. These do not appear when the unsheathed root is viewed.

Questions. Do the insects have a name? Can I read more about them somewhere? Does the crystalline sheath have a name? Can I read more about it somewhere? What is the difference in structure between the root and the trunk?

As this may turn out to not be a plant problem depending on the identity of these mystery things, if you just want to suggest a better place to post. Thats ok.
