Second grow - help me avoid my first mistakes

Hi all!

So I managed what I would say was probably a 80% successful first grow! I grew Purple Punch which was a favourite strain of mine that I once managed to get (wasn't my fav. Until I had it ofc and I don't have much/any choice in my area).

Why wasn't it a 100% successful grow? Well I think I harvested a little too early. The buds were quite airy and spacious and not as dense as I was expecting, but by that stage the plant had become a jungle. I had 2 failed grows before that, so with this one I did less and generally left it to do its own thing (whereas before I was like a mother with her newborn). I mean the harvest was crazy, each branch was as thick as my arm/leg with bud and had multiple branches everywhere. The main cola ended up taking light stress as it was reaching right into the lights at the top of my grow tent, and as the weather was changing I decided to harvest (pistils and under the scope it 'looked' ready, but how would I be sure, was my first). I had also started to notice some mold in some of the super dense areas, the jungle was just filling the tent and blocking airflow.

So I harvested, ended up having to throw most of the main branch due to mold, but still ended up with enough to see me like 5 months.

Issues;
Size - the plant was massive. Autoflowering strain. How do I keep the plant smaller? Is it the size of the bag it's in? The grow seemed to take like way longer than I expected, at like 6 months almost.

Airy buds? Is that because I let it get so big? And I didn't cut off the nugs? Or would it simply have fattened up anyway had I left longer?

My grow tent is decent size, I have a good light, I effectively specced the space to be ample for a single plant, but it seemed to just grow and grow and grow.

Any tips for my second grow to keep the plant smaller? I'd like a faster harvest - so I can try different strains instead of having like a year's supply of 1, I don't mean beyond the realms of the plant, but my grow was like 3x what was advertised. So I must have done something/not done something.

My thoughts are;
Smaller grow bag
Earlier light change? Can not switching to bloom lights (LED with veg and bloom lights) cause it to stay vegging as an auto?
Trimming? Both in veg and bloom phase?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I've waited out the weather and got a little seedling just breaking ground.

Pics would help, but with autos smaller pots will keep them smaller because they start flowering as soon the roots stop reaching. Airy buds can come from a few things, not enough light, to much heat, to high of humidity sometimes it’s genetics, the few autos I’ve done haven’t been super dense.

nobody really likes smoking purple punch, it’s more eye candy than anything. Works good in crosses though.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Grow tent is 80*80*160cm or 32*32*63"
Lights are; 600W LEDs
VIPARSPECTRA 600W LED Grow Light, with Veg and Bloom Switches, Full Spectrum Plant Growing lamps for Indoor Plants Veg and Flower(IR Included) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07CPGQVJD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apan_glt_i_JVH5JQE2MGPFSZD42XZS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I was monitoring temp and keeping it between 22 -> 26 degrees C (measuring at mid height of tent, with heater at the bottom), I had 2 fans for airflow, one large below and one small above. I have an extractor external to the tent ducted in.

I loved purple punch! But like I said I didn't have much choice really, so for me that was like amazing. I really liked the taste, although I no longer smoke it since growing, now I just vape, which I am enjoying. So I should probably hand in my badge and soil at the front desk and vacate these premises now you all know I no longer rollitup! Who'd have thought, 20 years of smoking and all I had to do to break my tabacco habit was grow it!

Sounds like it may have been my pot then. I had it in a 10L grow bag, I thought the auto time would dictate more of its size, and I thought a larger pot would mean less watering Freq. But tbh I just wasn't sure how big a 10L bag was, so I didn't want to find out it was too small. I can probably either get another smaller size or just put less soil in it.

I've got a phoenix big yield auto seedling on the go now, so keen to see how that plays out!

Ok! More Lights it is then! Is what I have not enough for 1 plant? I must have fucked up my research pretty hard then. Damn it. Cheers guys

Any worthwhile in having a different style secondary light source? Like CFL or HPS? I can add anything realistically.

I hadn't come across a suggested PAR range, so thank you for that, that's super useful to know.

I wouldn't bother. Money you spend on supplemental lighting now could be better spent on upgrading to a better light to cover your 3x3 space appropriately imo

EDIT: your current light is decent enough to veg a 3x3 but you def will want to upgrade before you go to flower. You've got 30-60 days to save up :)

Welp the money I've saved from getting high on my own supply has that covered! Appreciate the assistance, looking forward to watching my little Lady grow.

I will pop a few pics in along the way

All you need to do is do everything 20% better and it'll be perfect next time.

Seriously though, as stated above that light has very bad coverage in a 3x3. 2x2 it would be alright, but even getting the right par and dli doesnt make up for the poor spectrum of old tech blurple. Most didnt even have 660nm red. Hot in the middle at 250w but almost useless around the edge.

These companies must still have a heap of these old shitheaps to flog off, surely nobody makes these things still?

If you’ve got an hps handy it’ll do a lot better 400w would do great. They’re cheap af to. Or a 300w led something along the lines of mars fce3000 or spider farmer se3000. All great choices for that size space or any similarly specced leds really.

Honestly I'd be curious to see how one of these would do for you:

You can get the non-dim version for under 180 euros which is scarily close to the price you paid for your Viparspectra light

You’d want like 4 of dimmable ones, undimmed would probably be a bit much in a 32x32 also way to expensive for what it is and how cheaply you can make an almost exact copy.

Airy buds can be genetics. My struggle is with temps. Foxtailing larf. My current grow is legit genetics from Canada. Your post has a lot of info - just not the relevant info. How long were you flowering? Sounds like there was too much veg, then you ended up with too large of a plant to manage in flower. I don't do autoflower... I'd say just try growing some femmed seeds and stick to a schedule. Pick an easy and predictable strain. Indica dominant for indoor grow.

Definitely share pics.
