These just rolled into town today. Looks like male pollen sacks, but I wanted some other opinions before I hack him down.

looks boy to me. pod on the end of a stem = pollen sack = male

You can tell because the ball is made up of segments that (later) open up like an umbrella. The female calyx is quite different (more like a rolled up leaf with two white pistils coming out of it) even though hard to tell when they are small. In other words, yes, male.
