should you ever de-shell a weed seed

So, here is the thing. Usually when the seed is stuck it is because you did not plant it deep enough. If it’s placed too shallow, as the seed is pushing up there isn’t enough friction to rub the seed shell off. I messed up before and planted one too shallow. The seed shell would not come off and as the other one plant took off, the seed hindered the seedling from progressing.. If I didn’t intervene than the plant would have died 100%. But I ran the risk of killing the plant if I took the shell off myself. I decided the latter and said fuck it. I sprayed the shell and let it soften up a bit and used tweezers to very very gently peel the shell off. It worked, however the plant was stunted the rest of the grow. The starter leaves were stuck under the shell so they were brown and not great when I pulled the seed off. It ended up finishing but becuase of my poor placement of the seed it ruined the plant from ever becoming the same size as her sister.

Sorry, I totally misunderstood. I thought you meant pre-germination.

I actually remove stuck shell and membrane fairly regularly. I use a pair of tweezers and a small no longer sharp knife.

Like jtrizzy said.....be very careful and very gentle, I've pulled more than one head off getting it right.

Good luck.

Yep, after germ, just moisten with a drop of clean water & work the casing off. There's a skin that'll be under the shell, if left will hinder growth. Moisten with another drop of water & it'll peel right off also.
You are operating on a newborn - handle with care!

No never. Only seeds I ever had to de-shell where citrus seeds (orange and lemon) and peach seed once lol that was a job and a half.

The way I've done it was to put the tweezers in the crack of the shell, where it's open a little, and let the tweezers open on there own. That has popped the hull off without pulling at all.
