simple, efficient DIY exaust hood

I have seen some posts about exaust questions and cooltube questions so I am showing you how i build my DIY hood with exaust tube.

I have had awesome results with this setup. I run 400w MH's and HPS's with this hood set up and it will keep a 4x4 room at 80 to 83 degrees at all times with the lights on.

I do build my own hoods to cut down on costs. this is what i use

1 two foot long by 4 to 8 inch diameter dryer metal exaust tube. 4 to 8 bucks @ hardware store.

1 flexable dryer vent tube, whatever length you need. 5 to 15 bucks.

2 lengths of small chain or good vinyl rope. 3 to 8 bucks.

this is assuming you have a ballast and extention cord to hook everything up.

first, the metal duct is the kind that is split down the center and you have to seam it together when using it for a dryer or whatever you would use it for.

find center on the vent and draw a 3 and 3/4 circle on center, then drill a small hole in the center, now mark lines from one side to the other and repeat this 8 times so it looks like a waggon wheel.

now with pair of tin snips or good scissors, snip the metal along the lines up to the edges of the circle.

now carefuly bend the edges out, it will cut you if not carefull. dont bend them out all the way.

then snip about half the sharp edge off all 16 tabs to make them flat. you can see it in the picture.

you can drill holes on the edges to put your chain or rope to hang it with. i like to use good vinyl rope with a slipknot at the top for easy adjusting of hight. it will stay in place after adjusting if the knot is tight.

now you can attach your light socket. i wont go into detail about this because there are so many ballasts out there. i purchace large shop or wherhouse lights localy and run long extentions to the sockets to move my ballasts to another location.

dont install your light yet, take your flexable vent and fit it over the tabs you have sticking out of the top of your hood and bend the tabs tward the vent. this will hold the vent on tightly with no need for tape. if you want you can put a ziptie around it for safe mesure, i never had one come off.

now hang your hood with your choice of hooks or device to hang with and run your exaust tube to your fan. i recommend a long vent tube for lowering and raising your hood.

no need for cooltubes or glass light covers with this setup. it works great and is easy to change bulbs.
here are some pictures for refrence.

hope this helps some DIYers.
