So I haven't been on RIU in a while and rarely post, (I'm a chronic viewer) but I've decided to embark on a new project and I'm looking for some input.
I'm going with a 8' x 4.5' x 6.5' grow tent, attempting Al B Fuct's approach at harvesting every 2 weeks. The goal is to create this setup using Aero/NFT buckets while utilizing the KISS approach (Keep It Simple Stupid) for nutrient changes.
My newly created grow journal has all the information, but here's the potential problems I'm looking at:
Utilizing 10 gallon Rubbermaids, 2 per week, StinkBud Veg setup (modified to my own liking). The number of plants per container is up in the air. The picture shows the potential locations that I'm considering but unsure as to which would be best. Of course giving the plants the most room would be optimal to reduce mold, disease, etc. but if I lollipop the plants, it may be easier to utilize more plants per square foot.
Another problem will be the reservoirs. The drawings suggest 20 gallon bins, 1 per every 2 flower buckets at the same dimensions of the flower buckets. I'm still unsure if I'll be able to find a bin that width but shorter (to minimize the distance between the light and top of the flowering plants)
The flowering buckets are also an issue in regards to root mass. Having 2 buckets drain into 1 reservoir, the 10gal buckets may be too small to support the root masses of each bin. I'm going to try to put mesh over each drain to prevent the roots from growing into the reservoirs because I will be moving the reservoirs in and out to supply nutrients every week. I'd rather do that then lug 20 gallons of water, 4 times every week.
Temp control will also be an issue. With the use of 2 1000w lights, there will be lots of heat generated in the tent and will have to consider the required cfm for intake and output fans to stabilize the temp inside the tent with the surrounding environment.
The final problem would be the layout. I have one where the veg and flower are in the same tent while the other is just flowering in one tent and mother/clones in another. This will all depend upon whether or not I have access to both sides of the tent given the dimensions of the room.
Keep in mind that all of this is prior to fabrication.. I have crops growing, but (as an engineer) I'm trying to assess the risks of the setup prior to engaging in the actual build of the system.
So there you have it, I'm open to all suggestions and input as I'm a firm believe in constructive criticism, both good and bad.
