Light movers are a waste, IMHO! Your plants are getting the same amount of light, no matter if the light is moving or not. I'll explain...
Say you have plants A and B. When the light moves to the left, so that the left side of plant A is getting some more light intensity, the right side of plant B is now losing that exact same amount of intensity. Doesn't matter if you're giving more light to one side, for a given amount of time, because that's the same same amount of light you lose on the other side.

LOL! You must be talking about those ceiling fan looking lights. Forget what they're called. Not even sure anyone uses them or if they're even around anymore. They came out about 10 years ago.

"Interesting", yes! A gimmick, most likely. You can only produce so much light, and moving it around doesn't create more. And, light does pass through the leaves. HIDs and sunlight are going to be much more effective at this, of course.
In order for something like this to be effective, it would have to spin at a higher rate per second, than the leaves' frequency of absorbing light. The same as how video plays at roughly 24 and 30 fps, to match how human vision's frame rate of about 30 fps. This would create the illusion of constant light around all the areas the light covers as it's spinning. Any slower, and it would be inefficiently trading off shadows and light.

tape a boxcutter to the lower shade
and you can harvest once they get tall enough too
but in truth
light movers were really bad in their day
very rare these days
an extra light don't cost that much either

Exactly! Light movers are around the same cost as an extra light! Much better solution. Plus, with dimmable ballasts, you can turn the lights down and move them closer, since each light would only have to cover half the space. That means lower temps and energy usage!

I seen a lot of the commercial growers are using 1000watt hps on parallel movers with the light less then 12 inches from the top of canopy. Some say there are noticeable increases have been recorded with movers then the ones who haven't used them are saying waste of time. The money for a unit at the local hydro shop is about 300 bucks. The savings on equipment plus extra penetration from the light moving and closer to the plant seems to be very attractive. Im on the fence with with it. May go one more grow with the same old then have a few tests with movers. See if i can dial it in.
