some roots sitting in reservoir is there enough air?

In hydro, if i cut a hole in my reservoir cap and put the pot in and let the roots grow from the drainage holes into the nutrient solution (but only the bottom roots would be touching the nutrient solution)

My question is:

Would the roots in reservoir rot without air stones? (only an inch or less of roots would touch the nutrient solution, the rest would be hanging in the air between the pot and solution and the growing medium in the pot would be in aquarium rocks/sand)

Would the reservoir "air" be moist/humid enough for the hanging roots to drink?(the reservoir is sealed)

Would it work?

I'm not really looking for better suggestions yet (although any tip is greatly appreciated), just want to know what would happen.

What you are referring to is DWC hydro bucket growing. You will need to add air stone to oxygenate the water/solution. They are cheap and can be found at any pet store. Go to the fish section buy a decent size air pump for around 20 USD, and an air-stone for each output from the pump. They only cost about 3 bucks a piece.


Then you can just let the roots grow in the water and you wont get root rot.

Yeah I'm going to buy supplies for a good DWC system since it seems to be the less maintenance one.

you don't need a pump, you just need to eliminate the empty space between the pot and the resovoir. Grab a bucket, drill a small hole (1/8") about 1"-2" from the bottom of the bucket. Fill the bucket with chunky grade perlite or coco, and transplant a rooted clone or sprouted seed. This is what is called a hempy bucket. The roots grow down through the perlite into the small resovoir, but drink it up quickly and therefore never rot. It is an incredibly easy system with solid results. check it out.

I use no airstones in any of my DWC. I'm not very experienced in DWC but I am in medicine. The first time I checked and found slimy airstones they were tossed. From pumice dust. I weight the ends of my airlines and let 'em drop.

Growing the plant in my signature hempy style, roots sit in 2 inches of nute water and are dry by the next day. I water them every day

Do you have a regular water pump. Some times the turbulence for the flowing water can trap air. That how it works in real life. there is now giant air-stone of the sea. Well and underwater plants.

They would probably do better with an air stone

yea, I have seen that work too. The air stones create tiny bubbles which infuse the air better, so if you want to take the time to puncture a tube a thousand time with a needle that will work.

there is no pump its a passive system, i was thinking of adding an airstone, but i will see how it goes without i think , if the girls tell me they are hurting i'll put 1 in, you think they will do much better with the airstone,?

The more oxygen the roots get the better. Better roots, better plants.

But if you got a way of doing things don't change them if they're working.

its fine to do, i have done, check my threads there is pics of root mass submerged in solution doing hydro
