Specific height or age before flower?

Hi all do people have a general height or specific age from seed or clone before putting them into flower I understand the clones will need established roots developed before being able to flower properly but just asking as a rough guide I know the plants can double in size during flower and trying not to end up being stuck with plants being to close to the light and start crisping up and dying my height is 6 foot max height setting for light so maximum of say 5 foot for the top canopy but I'd like to stay a bit smaller so the light is not right on the roof of my room do I flip them to flower at maybe foot and a half(18 inch) and hopefully that way they should stay below four foot there still small now so have another few weeks of veg to but their clones of an unknown strain so don't want to take them to high as sativas grow tall through the flowering period or so I've read anyway, thanks for any input or help

Already started to lst a couple and topped one to see which I prefer for future grows as this is my first grow and that's what I'm thinking about with the strain being unknown I can't say how high they would generally be after a stretch in flower so thinking to flip them earlier once they have widened out and lower branches catch up to the top of the plants

I generally like to flip on the early side in a situation where the stretch is unknown, your plan sounds good plus if you have a cutting you will know how she stretches for next time.

Thanks for the input buddy I'm gonna keep tying them down for the moment to fill them out a bit then will switch before they get to tall
