Spotted lantern fly infestation

I heard back from the grower and owner of Supernaturals in New Paltz NY. They haven't seen lantern flies this summer so he didn't have anything other then to suggest netting to keep them out. If the flies are crawling up the stems at the beginning of the season then I'm not sure netting would work. But if someone wants to try that next year you should make sure to find and destroy as many of their egg masses as possible before next season.
I keep looking but have failed to see any eggs sacks.
My number are really down this year they seem to have gone elsewhere.
last year where there would be a line of adults there are one or two. I find at night after the nightly inspection of quail coop they don't move if you shine a light at them so I finger flick them. They will spiral to ground with bad wing

I just googled that and found this: https://extension.psu.edu/there-is-a-predator-hiding-in-empty-spotted-lanternfly-eggs
The answer seems to be yes! I'm definitely going to check that out! Hoping I have the same experience as formularacer and that the population here is way down next year.
But I saw a really strange thing earlier today. I was getting gas and noticed an adult lantern fly crawling on the shoulder of a woman at the pump opposite me so I told her and then I noticed they were all over the gas station. What is there for them to eat at a goddamn gas station???

i was waiting to pick up my daughter from high school after i posted this and seen mixed results, i need to find the study but one study did say they do not eat them, one said they do, but its something i would def try

My apprentice was sitting by the coop catching lantern flies and putting them in the coop. The juvenile lantern flies get eaten right up. The adult lantern flies get tossed about till the wings come off then they eat the body. The praying mantis only leave the wings and just eat the body.

I put 32 eggs in the incubator from my birds so far 4 have hatched. Chicks are very entertaining so are the adult birds which makes a great distraction from this cancer shit. The chicks are clueless and exploring everything than dropping to nap. Where the adults have personalities and quirks.
Off to the garden to check on things kill a few more lantern flies.

Cancer? So, so sorry. Interesting about the birds eating the lantern flies. I had read that, given time, various local song birds will notice them and start to eat them.
We used to have a ton of praying mantis around here but they've disappeared. They would decimate the butterflies - we'd find piles of wings underneath the butterfly bushes. Kinda sad.
This morning there were way fewer lantern flies, and I hadn't been down there since Tuesday. I vacuumed just about everything I could find. First time I ran out of lantern flies before running out of battery. It also seemed to me that the plant that is farthest along flowering, and therefore stinkier than the other plants, had the fewest flies. Maybe the strong smell repels them?

Cancer it sucks but then my wife leaves me alone with how much pot I consume.
I hatch a few ooths and spread the mantis about every year so trying to add to population.
Also release ladybugs and this year observed a lot of juvenile ladybugs.
Have seen catbird feathers on cannabis plants so I know catbirds like them but not see others go after them.

Sounds pretty sophisticated all the biological controls you're using - impressive! I just grow weed. And tomatoes and cucumbers. I have seen some of the lantern flies on the cucumber vines, but not nearly what's been on the plants in my main growing area. And I have 2 more plants growing next to the cucumbers and have only seen a few flies on them.
Yes, cancer sucks indeed - enjoy your smoke though!

right there with ya brother, most people leave me alone with the cancer and the weed, i have noticed tho i only really care about major problems now adays everything else i chalk up as first world problems and move on with my day, joint in mouth

That so funny I have this cat bird that bounces around my plant but doesn't touch yet, lol. Only a little Auto don't want it perched on it. Just eat moths or something

Damn! That's amazing - what a brilliant young lady! I'd definitely buy one of her devices and put it by my growing area. I'm seeing very few these days, mostly adults which I guess are breeding now and I should probably be more vigilant about the vacuum. I did see one that was molting and becoming an adult - pretty horror-movie'ish. I didn't know what I was looking at first, put it in a jar and in a couple of hour it had morphed into a small adult.
