Stealth Hydro Bubble Buckets

Hi, I'm looking into buying one of these systems and have a question about the buckets.

From their pictures online they look like modified version of the Sterilite bins I can buy at WalMart. I don't have a problem with this except that those bins are not 100% light proof. If you hold one up to the light they are opaque and need tape or paint to make 100% dark.

Are the Stealth Hydroponics buckets 100% light proof or opaque?

Thanks

They buy stock stuff in bulk, package into kits and resell it at a large profit. You would do much better to build your own, there are plenty of people here who will help you. As for the light, get some spray paint for plastic, one black and one white. Paint the tote or bucket black, then when it is dry paint it white over that.

Thanks IS. I am still curious to know if the Stealth Hydro buckets are 100% light proof or not.

Thanks again.

Then my next question is, do those people that buy the Stealth Hydro system paint or tape the buckets?

Nowhere on their site do they talk about problems with the buckets not being 100% light proof.
To my understanding you are getting what you see in the picture.

I would say no, but I do not work for SH, nor would I buy there product when you can make one.

You can get that whole setup at HTG with a better bucket for like 20 bucks.
I'm actually gonna make my own hybrid aero/dwc system using sterilite buckets but if Stealth Hydro and the users of Stealth Hydro systems don't light proof their bins, then why should I if I use the exact same bin?

If you don't light proof it you're going to grow algae. I think what everyone here is trying to tell you is, don't order the SH crap. lol

Thanks for all the great replies. I built my own system (with painted bins) but wonder why SH would go to all the trouble to design and market a system but not go the extra step to make it work properly (an not piss off customers) and light proof the bins.

The answer to your question is that they didn't go to any trouble and they didn't "design" jack. They came up with an approach of little merit (drip from below with pump in res) and gave it a very cute and catchy (although misleading) name, bubbleponics. Beyond that all you are doing is paying SH a lot of money to go to the store for you and assemble stuff available on the market and ship it to you.

lol, I'm not paying them jack. My home built system rocks. I was a little misleading in the original post. Been using a home built system for months. The goal was to find out if people are using these systems without light proofing and to see what their outcome was like. The light proofing process is a PITA (I have used aluminum HVAC tape on some and painted others) especially if you have multiple buckets. DWC/bubble/Aero is the only way to go.

Perhaps Sterilite will come out with light proof growers bins :) Any Sterilite reps out there?

I don't recall what kind, I got it at walmart and it said for plastic. I did two totes with one can of each color. Now maybe that still didn't make them 100% light proof, but I think 98 or so will be fine.

Hey, thety sell for like a buck each these lids that fit onto the tops of the 6 individual buckets...the rest is under the hood, you're good.

another alternative to block out light (really cheap and easy) ...is A roll of Aluminum cooking foil.... it is easy to wrap , holds its shape...is somewhet durable ...definately blocks light...and costs just a couple bucks .... spend another couple of bucks and buy a roll of aluminum tape to secure it to the bin....and you'll be SET UP !

The light will still come through the Net pot, check out KiloBits grow with this set up, He left the containers alone, didn't even use a darket colored one and never appeared to have problems with Algae, and neither did I with this system, I have the same setup as SH but obviously set it up for a fraction of the cost by assembling it myself...
