Strong unnatural citrusy smell in buds

So this last round was my first in grow tent and I noticed toward the end that my buds were taking on an unnaturally strong citrusy kind of smell. Maybe almost like a cleaner in a way. Kinda stung the nose a little. All strains have this same smell mixed in with their own unique scents. Now I recognize this smell from the past where I’d jarred bud too early/didn’t burp enough. There was never any visible sign of mold or anything in the jars..even in a jar I left closed for weeks after noticing smell. Over time the strong strange smell fades and it no longer has that little sting to the nose. The original scent never fully comes around. Scratching my head cause the same smell has happened to growing plants. No signs of mold or anything. Dried and over time the smell has faded and the bud has retained some of its original terps. Humidity was usually in 45-58 range through flower with maybe a few days being in the 60s. Anyone know what this smell is? I wondered in the past but now I’m really needing to know

Sounds like terpenes. What's your medium and nutes?

I wish it was terps. Thing is it makes all strains take on the citrusy cleaner sting smell. I’ve grown these clones for a few years and this smell that came on last round was not a good thing. Each strain went from smelling like they should to taking on that smell I described. It’s not a smell that these clones should have. Some of these clones are very different when it comes to terpenes but all took on the same strange smell. The taste is off as well

Medium was promix blended with ocean forest. I went light on the nutes and leached for the last 4 weeks. Just some cheap epsoma fertilizer that I like

Did you jar too early? Do you know the RH of the jars?

I’ve had this happen when jarring too early. Same smell. Never any mold signs. This was crazy this time cause it happened with plants that were live and finishing flower. I noticed it when I bumped into a cola. Inspected the rest of plants and all the same. It’s like one week they were as should be and then all of a sudden they are all altered

Are you buying new soil each time or recycling it?

Was this the mix and feed used in the past runs? I’m stoned as shit.. but came across this and it got me thinking. I ain’t saying I’m actually coming up with a solution, or explanation.. but I’m thinking :lol: :eyesmoke::eyesmoke::eyesmoke:

So the only change is that this grow was in a tent?
About before.. was it still indoor.. but in a room? Or outdoor?
If it was outdoor prior.. I have some stoner theory.. but if it was in an indoor room.. I’m fk’d lol no ideas there.
 
I did "under-dry" my first crop after the blurples. The HLG nugs were far denser than any of the previous blurple nugs and needed more than 6 days drying. ( Should have gone at least 8 days ... OOPS! ) Going into the jars too damp will make them smell a bit like that old dish rag. So ...
  • How long did you hang/dry them before you jarred them?
  • When you jostled the jars during the cure, did the bud clump together or easily break apart?
  • Did any of it stick to the sides of the jar - and you had to smack the glass to get them to unstick?

always indoor. All my other grows were open in a large bedroom. The only thing that changed was now it’s in a tent and in a new house

I dried the buds fast. Much faster than normal because the smell I described was taking place while the plants were still in flower. This surprised me because I’ve had this smell before but only with already harvested buds that were jarred too soon or not burped enough. This time it has nothing to do with bud being too wet in jars or taking too long to dry. It’s a strong citrusy maybe lime like cleaner type of smell. Anyways, this strange smell slowly went away after I harvested this time and quick dried. Now the natural terps are just weak and the taste is off. I know the dish rag smell you’re talking about. This is different and much sharper to the nose.
