Just got my loupe via eBay. The light allows a good color check. Takes a week to get it but no store has one.

I too have the above mentioned loupe so, I'll go ahead and suggest 60x if you're anywhere the half century mark of life such as myself.

I personally use a Carson Pocket Microscope. It is 60-120X magnification with an LED:
They sell cases for it too like this:
These are cheap and portable. The downside though is you can't take photos with the microscope itself or blow it up on a screen. If your goal is to simply assess ripeness, it might be a good choice.
