Agreed. No effect whatsoever. If you are using a MH or HPS, you should wait at least half an hour before turning the lights back on. They need to cool down before firing them up again.

I have often read about this leaving to cool down thing with HPS bulbs. I never did and never experienced anything. If i turned it off then on, it would gnerally just come abck on. Occasionally the ballast would fire and the bulb wouldn't light, so i'd turn it off for 10 seconds and then bingo, working again. Is it to minimize a risk of blowing a bulb or something? I'm probably about to be told what a fool i've been :D

Iv only had a cheap bulb i got from homedepot blow from power going on and off my hortilux has been through plenty of surges and power outs and seems fine i think cheap bulbs blow easy and so it prolly became common pratice to let the gases cool before exciting them again

No, it shortens the life of the bulb (and I think possibly the ballast). It's down to the initial huge current draw to 'fire' the bulb. If the bulb doesn't fire (which it won't if it's hot) that current draw continues. I'm no expert on it but that's my understanding.
