To trim or not to trim?

These bigger plants on the left are all clones from the same mother. They all seem to grow well with big buds and little leaf. I haven’t done any trimming at all in that tent. On the right three different plants, all a few weeks younger, and I’ve already taken several huge fan leaves off the indica in the back and a few from the Banana Hammock front right.
Depend on the plant, or do you always exfoliate?

I defoliate based on plant needs. If leaf mass will block proper airflow they get trimmed. And they all get lollipopped.
