this is my first grow. I am running some rain dance by greenpoint and today I decided to attempt to top one of my plants. My plant had 5 nodes and watching videos online I see some people cut off the top node completely while others cut just above the top node. I Took off one of the nodes completely. just wondering which is the best way?

You can top at either node. A lot of people will wait till the 5th node and cut just right above the 3rd node. Pretty much like this, except you can do it at whichever node you feel is best.
Make sure you cut the middle main stem, and leave the 2 stems on either side to create the V.

^^^^ this
Just remember that new growth develops at the leaf junction-that's the area to avoid damaging.
