Topping or FIMing while plant is recovering from a deficiency

I have 4 plants ready for topping or FIMing, my camera is not working, first question two of my bigger plants are recovering from nitrogen def. leaves are recovering and getting a nice shade of green. my question is can I top or FIM them while they are recovering? or should I wait. Second, FIM or top which one should I do first? I want them to be nice and bushy, and not to tall like my last plant(the male which we must not speak of ). I have research both FIMing and Topping and I have not seen this situation, and I have not seen in which order to do these two steps.

some plant pics would be neccasary for a accurate answer, but in general id say go for it unless the plant looks extremely stressed. Personnaly I top around the 4th of 5th node of the plant, let it grow for a week then fim the new shoots at there second node and veg for 2 months. This combined with a super cropping later in veg gives me very short very wide plants with many colas. However if your just doing one topping id say go for a fim as that generally gives more main colas.
