Hey folks,

Going to visit the USofA this summer, spending a few days in Chicago, Detroit and then to Traverse City for a week. we have our plans made for Chicago (blues bars and boat rides etc), Detroit (Tigers game and independance day!!!) and then we rent a car and go to Traverse City for the annual cherry festival.

Traverse City looks amazing, looking forward to seeing the Sleeping Bear Dunes! But can anyone else maybe share any thoughts on the place with me? We have a whole week there so would love to hear anyone's experiences.

thanks MM

Not far from Traverse City is a place called Alden, MI it is on the banks of Torch Lake. Absolutely a place that you have to see. Caribbean blue waters that are fed by an underground river from Lake Michigan. On the south end of the lake is sandbars where people go to party and have a great time.

Google it and check it out. You can rent any kind of boat you want and float around the lake. It's about 19 miles long and is attached by a series of rivers to 6 other lakes.

Fishing is unreal and the water is so clear you can watch the fish take your hook.

Stop in at the Alden Mill House they hand mix their own spices. Makes for some incredible food.

Traverse City is just a stone's throw away from some great vineyards. Head towards Mission Point lighthouse and you'll find them.

Petoskey is just a few miles away and they have a tremendous collection of the old Victorian homes. Petoskey is on Lake Michigan. There is a fossilized rocks called Petoskey stones and you can only get them there.

YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO GO TO MACKINAW ISLAND!!!

No motorized vehicles are allowed on the island. They have carriages, horses and bikes to rent.

They shot the movie Somewhere In Time there. You'll love it. You can only get there by boat, don't worry they have a ferry that take people to and fro.

Go to the Jewel Golf Course (right next to the Grand Hotel) and take the FREE shuttle to the back 9 holes called the Woods, the little bar back there is a hidden secret. It even has a 2 lane bowling alley.

Mackinaw Island is something you'll never forget.

The Cherry Fest is a ton of fun. You'll enjoy that too. If you need help finding a hotel just PM me. If you can't tell I love it up there.

wow thanks so much WinterWoman, thats exactly the kind of info I was after. My brother is sorting out the hotel so il ask him today when I see him what he has planned. You have given me some great ideas to check out, I'm sure we will have the time to leave traverse and see Alden, it sounds amazing.

Macinaw Island looks crazy, such amazing houses! I really want to visit there too, when I get back in later today I'm going to have a good look at info for these places.

Thanks again WW!

Very cool place, the bay is awesome.... I go about once every 3 years, wish I could go more..... the water is unbelievable, you can see 30 feet down at rocks while water skiing, and then it turns into a bottomless purple abyss..... it's a one of a kind bay.
Smoke a fatty from rowlman and tell her I'll be there soon!

You could also visit the International Music Academy in Interlochen, MI. They should be in session for some free shows during the Cherry Fest.
