buds don't need direct light to grow, they absorb their nutrients from the leaves. trimming fan leaves during flowering will reduce bud size and stop photosynthesis. it is best to tuck the fan leaves under rather than trimming if possible. don't worry about buds being shaded by fan leaves, the leaves are what produce those buds :)

leaf bracts (leaves coming out of bud) need light also

this is true, but sugar leaves are very small and don't absorb much light. they will still grow without a direct light source. Fan leaves are big and absorb the most light, and they contain the most nutrients for the flowers to feed from.

I agree. From my experience trimming 1 or 2 fan leaves doesn't hurt bud development, but why take the chance lol. I just like to tuck them under so they keep growing and absorbing light, but allows the flowers to get direct light.
