trimming popcorn buds?

Hey, Im trying to grow a lot of plants in a small area with as little as possible popcorn buds. If im putting the plants straight from clones into a 12/12 cycle, where and when would be the best time to trim the plant to not have many small lower buds and nice big ones on top.
