Nutrient Film Technique (NFT)
The plant is suspended in a net-pot, rockwool cube, or plug. It's roots are submersed in constantly flowing nutrient water 1 - 3mm deep.
Wick System
The plants are usually in rockwool filled net-pots, they have a wick that slowly delivers water and nutrients to the roots. It's a simple system that requires little maintenance or worry. The downside is that the water is delivered very slowly, and the reservoir remains stagnant which can deoxygenate it and promote algae growth.
Water Culture
The pots float in the nutrient solution. The water basin is best suited with an air stone to promote well mixed nutrients, help prevent algae, and oxygenate the water.
Ebb & Flow
Water is pumped into the roots at given intervals. Then it is drained out. Care must be taken to not let the roots dry out too much.
Drip Systems
This is the most widely used hydroponic system today. It is also used as a simple watering system for soil grown plants. The drippers can become blocked and should be checked daily.
Aeroponics
Nutrient water is sprayed at hanging roots and then recycled into the basin. This is a great system, it allows for maximum oxygen, water, and nutrients to be absorbed by the roots. Salt buildup is a problem in the sprayers so frequent checking is a good idea, also if you have many sprayers then one becoming blocked will not dry out the roots killing your plant.
