UK smokers, what happened to skunk?

I think this first appeared in the 80s but I Only started smoking 13 years ago

I remember all very cheap £120 an oz, £20 3.5g or £10 1.5g bud called english (basically not very well grown, dried or cured which would just have the slightest weed plant smell to it)
Then skunk!
Then boom superskunk!
These absolutely stunk to the high heavens and would make me high for the rest of the day enough to make my eyes squint 95% of the way shut, maybe my memorys off but this weed just to kick crap of these so called flavours and cali weed we have now

I was quite young so I'm wondering is anyone a bit older with a fonder memory of this era?
I dont even remember when the transition from english & skunk to all these thousands of different strains happened I just know I would love to know what genetics they were!

Did skunk disappear when a notable big profile gangsta got put away?
Did our police give pioneers immunity in exchange for the production of these extremely strong strains to disappear?
Was there imports from a country which had those imports interrupted?

I've smoked cali, I've smoked PGRs it's just not the same
English is easily obtainable with a slow dry but no cure
But cheese, skunk & super skunk
What happened?!

I’ve always wondered why you all liked cheese so much, yet it doesn’t seem to really exist in the US. I used to get my seeds from Europe, and cheese crosses took up like half of the menus. I’ve been tempted to buy a few packs, but it almost feels treasonous.

Baked Beans again. He runs Blackberry Kush and has for a while. He had a strain he called Nacho. His Blackberry Kush X Critical Cheese. Never tasted or smelled any cheese. Damned fine weed. Wish he’d run for another crop.

First spliff @ 13 constant from 19. Now 66 LOL
My starter @13 was Thai stick amazballs that was a trip.
We had squigeey black. Moroccan slate cartwheels. Afghani.
Temple ball. Chariss. Oil and sometimes some raw opium and bagfulls or African bush that was the seventies

Come the eighties gack bar or rocky appeared plenty of plastics. That's when I started growing.
Sensi was about the only seed bank. Quickly the old hash disappeared. Homegrown was hard to find if you didn't know anyone.

Nowdays there's weed everywhere potency and quality varies tremendously
Prices are way to high

They’re high for sure. What isn’t? Nutes? Check seed prices anymore. People knock outdoor but last time I was in OR had no problem on the street getting an ounce of some damned good “nasty outdoor” for $100. No way for indoor with electricity and etc.

Limited license growers here can run maximum 500 square feet of canopy. I’m told by a few I actually know that you’re looking at $50K before you sell your first bud. Cash only. No credit. No banking. $50 an ounce tax to the state before you can sell the bud. Cash. $15 for trim and don’t think you’ll drop it in the dumpster and pick it up later because it’s all 24/7 camera coverage live feed to the state.

Bottom line is don’t wait for prices to drop. Grow like hell and go into competition. Oh and they can’t deliver.

I recall 1oz being around £140 in 2004. Adjusted for inflation, that's about £220.

Hate to say it but you've become that old guy that talks about how everything is too expensive these days!

I have no idea what the general quality is like in the UK today. I don't remember the last time I bought it from a random. I do however remember all that piss poor "English" which we later called Vietnamese as it was mostly imported slaves growing it. After that came the glass / sand / Brix+ invasion that started a LOT of people growing their own just to avoid it. Quality got a lot better after that, but as I say, I lost track...

No sure if they mean cheese, when ak47/white rhino/white widow came about they were stronger than anything else and huge buds in a sack, the african bush smokers were saying it was laced and sending people loopy

I like kalimans stuff,
I’ve got a cheese #1 cutting of his which is a mouthwatering smoke and a beast of a nitro express (exodus x pure haze) out in the garden at the moment that looks promising and smells ridiculous,
Probably gonna order his suicide blonde too.

Yeah man I remember the dreaded glass/sand/grit epidemic, bad times!!!
It was just known as “spray” where I was and definitely helped steer people into getting their own grow started.
