Underside of leaves

Its a plant, in its natural environment the sun shines from above so its designed to absorb from above. the underside of leaves dont absorb light at all.

every inch of the plant that is above the ground and green, is green because of chloroplasts, anywhere theres chloroplasts, theres photosynthesis. albeit diminished, the undersides of the leaves can collect light and photosynthesize, also due to the fact that the leaves are thin enough that light will reach chloroplasts no matter what direction it hits the leaf from.

What mistaphuck said, plus the fact that the sunlight is available in a diffuse form from almost all directions (though not full spectrum) due to reflection from foliage underneath any particular leaf.
