Using a DIY carbon filter with a 6" duct fan?

I have a 6" duct fan from Home Depot. I made a DIY carbon filter as shown numerous times on this forum and others. It works great. Of course, the CFM rating is affected, and I noticed that the fan is working harder because of the increased resistance. The fan noise changes. Today, I've noticed that there seems to be a slight burnt smell is coming from the fan. The wiring is fine, so I'm thinking a bushing or the motor is starting to go. Are these fans not designed to do this? Should I get a replacement 6" fan from a hydro store. Thanks for any help.

Anytime you restrict the flow on any fan is not really good. Maybe you could build a bigger carbon filter so there is more surface area for the air to more easily pass thru.

Yeah the duct fan is not really good for carbon scrubbers the cfm rating is totally changed with the scubber on there, and they are not really ment to have all that added resistance, I would go get a 150 cfm can fan, the rating on the can fan is taken with the scubber attached so its totally differnt than muffin fan or duct fan that says 150cfm.

Ok, that's what I thought. What is the most silent/best running can fans out there. I've been reading and seems like Sun Leaves and Vortex are mentioned quite a bit. But with all the others, there is alot of choices out there. Thanks.

Yeah I got a squirel cage and it works way nice and I got it a pawn shop for $15
