vertical lighting

A question about lighting. I'm using overhead lighting, and my plants are getting quite large now. In a past thread someone mentioned vertical lighting. I checked at the grow store, and they told me I had to fashion my own vertical lighting from an overhead lighting setup. Is there any other way? I'd like to use the extra lighting to emphasize what I've already got, which seems to be working fine.

Also, what do you all think of LED lighting? are they effective. Can I use it in conjunction with what I've got?
