Planning a trip with my girl to humbolt county to see the real Redwood trees ! Planning on staying in SF for 2 days then hitting north to the Avenue of the Giants !! Anyone have any recommendations as to where the biggest and best sights are to visit ? Was thinking about staying in a small town called Garberville , I found a cheap hotel there. If anyone has taken the trip and visited let me know, i would love to hear the story or experience!! Thanks !

Was just up there my self about a week ago. I stay in Phillipsville (avenue of the giants) and up in Arcata. My GF's family has a house right on Salmon Creek up there. Love it!

Take a day trip out to Shelter Cove, right outside of Garberville. Nice Redwood grove as you pass over the Eel river on the Briceland Road.

take honeydew exit off 101 and follow all the way to petrolia....goes through humboldt redwoods SP and follows mattole river to the coast...tide pools during low tide...follow road north and it brings you to victorian ferndale

the road is a little rough in spots but it is a beautiful drive

i live in eureka and whenever people from outta town come up i take them on this drive

there's alot of places i like to just drive...the scenery is breathtaking up here

if you have the time, there's another good drive. take indanola cutoff just north of eureka and head north towards freshwater, at freshwater make a right and drive up to kneeland...if you stay on this road it goes through some sort of ranch preserve deal that is really scenic and it ends up in bridgeville on hwy 36(about 1/2hr east from 101 near fortuna) once you are in the ranch preserve the road goes from dirt/gravel to paved a few times but is actually a nicer road than out to petrolia.

I just got back from there. Take the 101 all the way up to Garberville. Make sure to stop at the big foot museum. It was an awesome trip. I love the people up there and the trip is super fun to take its about 4 hrs drive.
