I have been looking for an answer but can really find a sure thing.. Can I mix up a water only soil mix that will carry all the way through harvest in 3 gallon pots? Apparently sub's mix is too hot to use in a 3 gal pot

Organics typically do better in larger pots. In 3 gallon pots I am certain that you will run out of gas early. This being said you could always top dress early and finish with a few teas if need be.

I think it will also depend on how long you veg for. If you keep veg time short you might be able to get away with it.

I'm running with only 1g pots (will be moving to 2 or 3g for next run). Added a little top dress when going in to flower to make sure I wouldn't run in to any issues.. I'm sure I'll have to do it again once or twice before harvest.

We are running a water only soil mix in only 1 gallon smart pots. There is a recipe about halfway down the page in the link. We have top-dressed a few with worm castings and frass but other than that only water. I would cut the lime in half in the recipe though as a few strains showed what we believe to be cal/mag issues.

But you can see things are looking pretty good.
