Watering question: I can't find the answer

I have been searching for the answer to this stupid question about watering:

Everything I read states the soil must drain - wholes in the bottom of the containers/pots - people measure the PH of the flushed / drained water.

So here is my question: Soil growing - do you have all your soil pots sitting on plastic trays of some sort...when you water are the pots draining water onto whatever you have your pots sitting on??? for all stages????

I've tried to find the answer with no luck...so thank for the help..a newbie as you can tell. I'm getting ready to build my growing room.......I

use a saucer or hold it over something the water draining into doesnt matter, the water will all drain out in about 5 minutes or less when the soil reaches the maximum amount of water it can. you just need to dump the saucer out so it doesnt just sit in standing water which will kill it if it happens all the time. your watering a bit too much if your getting a ton of runoff, just watch it closely when you water and how much it takes b4 it starts draining like that and try to give it just enough water. how often are you watering?

i have mine in 5 gallon buckets from lowes the excess water drains into the top which i have on the bottom... yes i put holes in them.... the tops of the buckets dont hold much water and the rest drains onto some plastic i have down under all my plants.

Next time you go to your local grow store or garden store (you might have to wait until spring at some stores) get yourself a stack of seedling flats there cheap and make great runoff trays for underneath your pots I double them up because there kinda thin but it works great for me!

Sorry thats bad info I got to thinking and went and checked 5 gallon buckets dont fit inside the flats there too big! instead you could try to use some tops of like the rubbermaid style totes I know those work for 5 gallon buckets! I use 8.5'' x 8.5'' square containers and 2 of them fit very nicely in a flat!

dont water in your grow space, if you spill or overspray it will caus a moist spot for fungus to grow. pull your plants out of your box to water or spray. If your able to.

Just my humble opinion from experience.

I don't grow, smoke, or sell drugs. I'm just here to figure out why my father ruined my life abusing this poison we so commonly refer to as "Marijuana"!

What does this mean?? You think Marijuana is poison?

i used to work for a pizza place, the dough trays are 2'x3' or so and can fit 2 - 5 gal. buckets on 'em no prob... they're metal, rustproof, light weight, relatively reflective, etc. water evaporates off pretty quick because they are shallow, they work great... restaurant supply stores have these for $3 or $4...

User16... I would suggest that you start a thread with "that" as the subject line. I think there are a lot of people here that would be willing to help you figure out your question. Yes, you may take some abuse but it may be helpful to you.

Now, back to watering...

Moldy. I was reffering to go go ganja post #5 apparently I did that wrong or unclearly. I am a daily toker and was wondering about such a comment. I dare not refer to marijuana as a poison maybe a secret potion lol but not a poison.

Heres a tip from your Uncle Erv, I use 4 gal rectangular buckets (holes drilled in the bottoms & two plants each) and have them sitting in tupperware tubs. Every watering I do a "Mini-flush" and after about 30 min I take a wet dry vac & suck out the excess. I have a 1" hose attached to the vac nozzle & I don't even have to bend down to do this. I give them another 15 minutes or so and then suck-em out again.
Works like a charm & no dry spots in the soil.

I use three gallon buckets with holes drilled in them, they sit in cheap plastic trays designed for plants, from Walmart. You can get them in various shapes and sizes. More expensive pots come with a saucer on bottom.

Thank you all for the info. I did not realize some people were carrying each plant over to a watering station to ensure no wet spots around the plants avoiding mold. We are building the grow room today. I planned to build tables on casters to sit the pots on. would it be a good idea to cover in plastic? Would make it easy to clean...no wet wood...I have a roll of 6 mil contractor plastic here The basement is unfinished and I was thinking I should cover the ceiling and walls with the plastic. As we work on this, we are setting up a 4x4 grow tent. We are gerninating seeds....then into the tent. Do you wipe down the inside of the tent with anti baterial soap or vinager? Sorry new at this and I don't want to destroy my plants once I get them going.

Again thank you for your help.

If you are only growing a few plants then it is always a good idea to water the plant in the bath.If you have a shower even better has long has the ph is ok then you can just flush the plants straight from the shower head. Then wait for about harf hour by this time most of the excess water will have run off.If you can't get hold of a decent size tray then use a cat litter tray for one plant if you are flowering quite big if you are flowering small and the pots are not that big then you may get more than one in each tray. Then the next day you can take the tray and the plant to the toilet or bath and emty any excess water in the bottom or leave it if you want the humidity to become a little higher........tyke.................................
