Watering walkway between plants

So I dug my holes smaller than what i needed. While working aroubd the edge I noticed the roots have reached the side of the hole. My native soil is garbage... Very low nutrients and clay heavy. I was thinking about digging them wider but unsure if it's worth disturbing the roots or if the roots have even gone into the native soil. I remember a thread a few years ago someone was taking about watering and feeding the walk ways but can't find the thread. Anyone have any input if it's worth watering and feeding the entire area?

Go for it and break it up. Add sawdust or composted organic material. No rotting green crap. I prune roots with a butcher knife. They heal and split in 2 like the plant does above ground.

Clay has many benefits and is not garbage. However it's thick and is hard for roots to get in deep. If you are going to make the holes bigger do it now so there is time to grow more and heal itself before the end of July.
Be careful not to over water because clay can act like a bowl and turn the soil you put in it to soup. It doesn't drain well at all.
Stay away from adding wood to your holes because it can affect the pH and suck up the nitrogen.
Good luck :)

I use the term garbage loosely. Over watering is my biggest concern. Still can't figure out if lighter more frequent or deep soaks more beneficial. The deep soak keeps them moist for 2 days in 90+ heat. I've cruised through your thread. How much water do you think your girls get? I'm in about the same size as your containers but in the ground. Just curious.

I get a lot of rain here so it depends. If it hasn't rained I give about 5 gallons every other day. The soil is always moist tho because manure holds it in well.
