Waterpipe filtration vs Type/strength of intoxication

I first smoked at the end of the year in 8th grade. I smoked probably twice within the next years, but by 10th grade I was a proud stoner.

Fast forward 6 years.

2 weeks ago I purchased my first no name glass bong. It has two tree percs with 3 branches each, an ice catch, down stem with diffuser slits and an ash catcher. I instinctively put rice in my ash catcher, as with 3 water chambers no more water is needed for cooling and instead it needs filtering of tar and ash. don't really know how I knew to do this, I have been smoking for over 10 years and one time I saw it before. Well after smoking for a while I noticed i experience the same tar blocking capablilites as those you use a carbon filter, although likely not as well as they do.

Anyway, today for the first time I put water in the ash catch and after smoking my usual amount, well what an uncomfortable experience that was. Throat closing up and tight, coughing, hacking, and dang just why do my lungs feel so small.

Now I noticed with no dry filtration, I got a much different high, very broad in effects and body altering versus just the head high i usually seek and i get with the rice in.

I feel my single experience is proof enough that water filtration doesn't really filtrate anything at all. Instead it cools the smoke. I do not intend to ever smoke my piece without some kind of ash catch i expect my lungs will be hurting just as bad next time.

my question is, does any one else agree dry filtration is essential for the smoothest toke, and replicating th effects of a vaporizer without the expense. I am now beginning to research carbon and dedicate my time to finding a better dry filter for my piece.

If you havent tried it, I highly recommend it.

I think you need to get an inline ash catcher first before you write off water filtration ;)

my mistake for not being clear.

I put rice in my ash catcher, then water in the base, and two perc chambers.

I am not saying water does not filtrate, I'm saying water is no where near as good a filtration method as rice is.

For example, After smoking for two or 3 days, the water is still drinkable ( if you poured it into an unsuspecting persons glass ) versus I have to change the rice in the ash catcher because it is so filled with tar, the drag on the bong hurts my lungs.

Hmm I use active carbon as an ash catcher and it keeps my bong really nice and clean and the hits a little better
Maybe get one of those and try using a hemp wick it's slot better then a ,lighter

interesting.... my fear would be that the rice would be /too/ good at filtering, filtering out too much psychoactive cannabinoids.

I wouldn't use rice. Your going to have a buildup of resin there, and THC is definitely going to be lost. Not a good idea. Bongs do make the hit harsher, but they are filtering the smoke. I don't really get how it's doing both, but it is. Maybe it's just bigger hits in a bong.

Interesting idea, but I believe water filters more than you think. The main reason water is used is because it's properties grab and filter out a lot of the bad chems, without touching THC (obviously non-soluble.)

Another interesting concept is type of water filtration vs. number of water filters. I.E. diffused vs straight/quantity of water stages. That first stage that contains the most contaminates should also be the most diffused. Think about it.

the reason you got a different high when you put water in the ashcatcher is because the rice is collecting some of the cannabanoids. which ones, i dont know. its like when i smoke out of a small pipe after smoking out of bongs for a long time. im not used to the lack of filtration and it gets me way more stoned. so maybe the water filtration does take out some cannabanoids.

we should think of a way to test this, to find out which cannabanoids are taken out by each process

I've heard that water WILL filter out some THC, along with the nasties.

Oil (THC) is not watersoluble, but when burning THC is no longer in oil-form.

I've often wondered how much THC/CBD etc we loose with water-filtration. My guess is far too little to have an effect.
