They're all garbage. Find some free templates on the interwebs and modify them.

wordpress is good

Wordpress is a content management/blogging system not web design software. Shady, if your site can fit into the blog style format, then you can easily get a wordpress and find a theme that works for you. Doesn't really work if you don't want it to look like a blog unless you want to modify it heavily.

adobe dreamweaver

not exactly 'easy' to use. but if you want to do it right, dreamweaver's a very good alternative....

thanks everyone....

I will look at these options in the morning too high to think about them right now

I appreciate the help

i find that just about everyon eis happy with wordprss. he may have to do a bit of tweaking but that's easier than building a wihle site.

that said, i thinke veryone is a bit smarter than they are and i assume that people can figure simple things out but according to others, they can not.so it may n ot be easy 4 someone else

If you get web hosting with just about any reputable host (I use Host Gator), they will have a list of pre-installed scripts, and can be activated with just a few clicks, and there will be many, many choices for website software including shopping carts, forum software, social networking software, image hosting, pretty much anything you can think of.

I pay about $20 a month for my hosting, but that is one of the not-so-basic plans. They have regular plans starting at like a few dollars per month.

I didn't knock it, I just said it wasn't web design software. I even said that if he could find a decent and doesn't mind the blog format it would definitely work. More times than not people looking for software to make a website are looking at making a few static pages with a couple images and wouldn't know where to start modifying a wordpress theme to get it looking how they want. It's difficult for people to understand the wordpress 'loop'.

That's just my experience from running my own boutique development shop for 8 years.

Pretty please tell me you aren't paying $20 for a shared plan!

edit: Just saw you said hostgator. I'm assuming you're running their 386mb VPS instance?

I do website design, hosting, and seo marketing for a pretty big company. HostGator is pretty good. They have a one click wordpress installer. I wouldn't trust any program beside wordpress to write the code for you. The free web page builder programs add lots of junk code which can hurt your website's ability to rank high in the search engines. If your looking to build a for profit site, see if you can hire a local web designer, but one that can hand code. Hanger them tweak your wordpress site then take over when the hard part is done. The only thing a skilled website designer needs is notepad and photoshop

I'm prepaid for quite a few years. If I paid month to month, it'd be more than $20.

It's not shared.

Yeah that's why I edited to say it must be their VPS plan. When your plan is up I would suggest looking at other VPS providers because there are a bunch that blow them out of the water now. I only suggest HostGator to clients that are inept at maintaining a server.

No skilled web designer/developer uses notepad. I get what you're saying though, a real coder can get by with it. Do you use HostGator to for your company?

If you ask me the key to good webdesign is to actually learn html/css/php/mysql/et al. Honestly they are not hard you just have to stick with it. You don't need any fancy software to write a webpage (notepad will do in a pinch) however code highlighting is a nice thing to have and I can recommend a few cross-platform editors.

W3schools offers some nice free tutorials covering most aspects of webdesign.

I've half a mind to recommend you use Emacs because it is pure fucking awesome. However the learning curve is quite steep and you'll want to learn lisp to get the most out of it.

Bluefish is a good, feature rich, editor for designing websites and Editra is nice when you want a clean interface.

Don't forget to check your webpages with the w3c validator.

Emacs!!! You and I shall fight to the death!! haha I'm a Vim guy myself

it's all how you look at productivity

somebody wants to sit down and type up 100,000 lines of code, go ahead.

i know kids 18 years old that'll do it faster, easier, and most of all CLEANER, using some of the software already mentioned.

i'd put my money on it...
