Up until the "reefer madness" craze-1930s- you could buy hash at pharmacies. Hash and bud were in the US Pharmacopeia up until some point around then, it was a regularly prescribed medication for an endless list of problems. Doctors knew more about using cannabis as medicine before the 1930s than they do now, it was one of their main tools. You also can't discount the experience of African slaves, many of whom brought cannabis culture with them from Africa.

It had become nationally popular during the 1920s recreationally, partly due to alcohol prohibition, (and medically, it was cutting into the massive profits the early Big Pharma companies were making off of cocaine and heroin), which is why the government decided to crack down on it, and promote absolutely disgusting, racist stereotypes about cannabis use, which culminated in the government propaganda movie "Reefer Madness". The American government actually promoted the idea that cannabis turned black Jazz musicians into spree rapists. Countless innocent Black people were lynched due to the reefer madness government campaign. We don't have an accurate count of the number of black people lynched during the 1930s due to the reefer madness campaign, but it was in the hundreds to thousands. The rabid insanity of Trump supporters today, in the face of easily verifiable truth and facts, reminds me very much of the reefer madness insanity that lead to the deaths of so many innocent black people in the 1930s and 40s (not that lynching stopped in the 40s, just the reefer madness related lynching's). You probably didn't want to know all that, but to answer your question, cannabis was very widely used prior to the 60s in the USA.

WTF are you even talking about that was the time of prohibition at the turn of the new century of 1900 Have you read about the outlawing of the opening of the prohibition on marijuana & alcohol? I read the stories from the old mobsters bak then

once i was 16 and sneaking a joint at family reunions, i found out that my mum's longtime boyfriend from high school, my uncles and their friends were smoking weed in the 50s. blew my mind considering how pissed off she was when i got busted.

my uncle got drunk one night and asked me if i had a can i could sell him. no idea what he was talking about. turns out that's what they used to call weed as it came in tin cans. windsor Ont area.
