What is an hermaphrodite?

An hermaphrodite, or hermie, is a plant of one sex that develops the sexual organs of the other sex. Most commonly, a flowering female plant will develop staminate flowers, though the reverse is also true. Primarily male hermaphrodites are not as well recognized only because few growers let their males reach a point of flowering where the pistillate would be expressed.

Hermaphrodites are generally viewed with disfavor. First, they will release pollen and ruin a sinsemelia crop, pollinating themselves and all of the other females in the room. Second, the resulting seeds are worthless, because hermaphrodite parents tend to pass on the tendency to their offspring.

Please note that occassionally specious staminate flowers will appear in the last days of flowering of a female plant. These do not drop pollen and their appearance is not considered evidence of deleterious hermaphroditism.

Here's an image of a hermaphrodite, specifically a female plant with staminate flowers.

i planted some white widow fem seeds from nirvana. i started them out in miracle grow and realized that that was not going to do the trick, so then i got foxfarms ocean forest and light warrior mix. i know stress can cause hermies. will that stress them out? (miracle grow)

You should be ok, as long as the actual transplant was gentle.

I made a plant go hermie once by doing this:

Start flowering it
Clone it
Force vegitation
Flower again

HELLA STRESSsssss

+ rep for those pics! I could not find anything close to that good when my first grow had 2 hermies. Those will be crazy good visuals for newbies that havent had a herm yet!

Hi - I was wondering if a plant is a true herm or just one showing late-flowering non-pollen flowers. Can you tell by the number of flowers. For example, if you see just a few (less than 10) on a 4-foot plant that has been flowing for over a month, is it more likely to be the harmless flowers or a true herm?

Thanks for any insights!

Hi I'm growing 1 plant outdoor and the wind kept pushing it over so it got really stressed which caused it (I think that was why) to go hermie =( So is it worth carrying on growing hermies if you haven't got others that would be pollinated by it, or are they worthless?
