very dumb question, but for a standard light, what do you call the "thing" you screw the lightbulb into that has a cable that goes into an electrical outlet?
would you google "socket"? or "light fixture"?

my ultimate goal is to search for a "fixture(?)" that is like a Y-adapter, where i can screw in 2 lightbulbs into the same cord that plugs into an electrical outlet. just trying to find the most efficient way (cost wise) of hooking my lights up

Go to homedepot or lowes eletrical department and look for a y socket adapter. You screw it into a light socket and end up with two sockets. Simple

If your trying a cheap cfl setup, buy a vanity fixture, called a hollywood strip light in my area, then use a y adapter in each socket to double the cfl's, about as cheap and easy as it gets

^^ I use that setup with the vanity lights, 3 sockets but i use 3 Y splitters to make it hold six bulbs. It works great with some 42 watt bulbs
