i assume its some kind of moth or similar but have been unable to locate a pic that looks the same, its about a 1/2 inch long.

Thanks for the input, but this little critter isn't actually black just a nice deep glossy brown.

That is a cocoon. there's a caterpillar inside. cut it open and see for yourself.

It's an Angle Shades Caterpillar. it will become a moth.
European species.

It probably is a cocoon of some sort... except I wouldn't cut it open... just watch and see what it does on its own. Maybe you'll see a butterfly emerge.
