What's the best surfactant for hydrophobic media?

It's amazing how some media or wicking accessories seem to go bad once they dry after initial watering.
Peat is well known for this. Also coco can be a bit of a pain. I also have some wicking material that is awesome when first used, but becomes almost un-usable if you let it dry out and try to re-wet it.
I have some Yucca from RAW which was supposed to be the best, but it BARELY works. I want something like dawn dish soap but won't kill your plants.
I do foliar feed now and then and have NEVER been able to get it to stop beading up on the leaf. Yucca is supposed to stop that, but it just doesn't work for me.
