whats the difference between normal and autoflowering seeds?

I just began to study mj growing because I will be living on my own by the end of this year.. :D
I read that autoflowering strains should flower even if the photoperiod doesnt change, like 18/6 from start to end, am I right? Some says that auto-seeds are much quiker than normal ones, is it real? Are there any other differences? For example:
Do they produce the same amount of mj? is quality/taste the same?
Can you control the size of your autoflowering plants? (with normal seeds I know that you can induce flowering pretty when you want. that will control the final size of the plant)
What about light type (temperature) and nutrients? Even if a plant autoflowers, she still need the right light/nutrient mix, right?
Like many other my first goal is to produce the maximum amount of good quality mj in the shortest period. I'm not a daily smoker so I suppose I can't really tell the difference between good mj and extremely good mj (I just get f-cking high with every kind of mj I try so.. maybe I've just been lucky, I dunno  lol)
PS. I searched older posts in the forum but surprisingly I found different opinions about many questions I'm asking above (ie correct photoperiod for autoflowering plants, quantity/quality of final mj harvested, opinions about 7/8-weeks autoflowering seeds ecc) =(
PPS. sorry for my bad english

Autos are a reg strain crossed with ruderalis witch are plants that are low in potency but flower based on age not light cycle.
Autos usually stay much smaller then reg due to the fact they start flowering about 3 weeks after planting.
You start auto seeds in the final pot unlike reg seeds which normally get at least one transplant before flower.
Most breeders of autos recommend around a 3gal pot from start to finish.
There are not allot of options as far as controlling size of autos other then LST.
You don't want to top autos.

IMO autos are junk, they take a good reg strain and cross in genetics that produce a plant with less potency.
I don't grow many autos, free ones that come with my orders are the only ones I grow.
At one point I wanted to grow out some autos to fill in empty spots in my veg room.
But once I grew out a half dozen or so from different breeders I found they are not for me.
Just too many issues, the last one I grew came down a few weeks back.
It was delicious seeds cheese candy auto, what a joke it was 6 weeks into flower and male flowers everywhere.
That was not the first time that had happened with auto for me 3 others from different breeders did the same.
Now sure maybe I did something wrong, but I highly doubt it as all the other plants (11 of them) in my room were just fine.
The cheese candy smelled great tasted great but the high sucked, some of that was due to early harvest.
But it was behind in resin production and size threw out the whole grow compared to my reg strains.
As for them finishing faster, not really if you start a reg 12/12 from seeds it will take about the same amount of time and end up around the same size as a auto.
The difference will be the reg will yield better and be much stronger smoke.

Thats my 2 cents for what its worth.

auto flowers start producing bud regardless of the amount of light you have and normal need to be switched to 12/12 to start flowering.

Also autos can be quicker but there are variables. They have sativa dom autoflowering strains that take over 100 days to grow fully.

Lastly autoflowers tend to yield less and are less potent because of the reuderalis cross

Is there a website where i can compare different seeds? Something that says that seed1 can be harvested in x days and will produce y grams of mj, ecc

Attitude seeds: just google it, they are having some issues getting seeds threw customs right now.
But their site is easy to navigate and has plenty of info.

I would caution you that allot of breeders lie like crazy on their strain info especially harvest times.
One breeder I trust is Subcool from TGA seeds, I have found his descriptions to be some of the most accurate in the industry.
He is also a member of the rollitup community his sub forum can be found here https://www.rollitup.org/subcools-old-school-organics/
If your interested in any of his strains their site is full of useful info on them. http://tgagenetics.com/strains/

Ok guys last question: when it says "flowering 60 days" is this from begin to end or after veg phase?
