Whats the purpose of Molasses

I read a little bit about using molasses for flowering. What does this do? does it have to be molasses? Can another more common house hold item be used such as honey or syrup?

check out my thread on molases in outdoor growing forum,,i had all kinds of replys....bottom line is it provides your soil with micro nutrients and creates a more dense bud from what i gather..im trying it now on 2 identical plants of same strain and will see for myself(best way to find out.)
