Whats your breeding goal???

I love my weed but I breed daylilies. There are 1000's and 1000's of named Hemerocallis and I'm close to getting my own named but need at least one more season.
The first rule of breeding is to have a goal. Whether it be a double Red Daylily that maxes out @ 26 inches and is an evergreen or anything else there should be a goal. I'm just curious what you breeders are up to. What is your goal for your breeding projects.
Years ago (like 25) I was crossing Skunk#1 with Northern Lights and Swazi with Hash plant but I had no goal. Sure worked out great anyway but WTF. With as many strains floating around as there currently are I was just curious what improvement you could be looking for.
Rock on Buds and I hope someone is getting close to where they want to be with their project.

my goal ? would be to cross a awesome strain to create another killer product :) and also another one would be to keep a landrace pure and not crossed so one day when it goes extinct i would have that awesome land race strain :) lol

peace budup16 :)

So big shit. If you don't have a goal you ain't got shit. Pollinating weed successfully is not a big deal and crossing 1 strain with another means absolutly nothing unless you have something in mind. Sure you might luck out and get a nice mutant that does, or is sumpin cool.:leaf:

Where is the area of improvement in general. Are you looking for a higher yielding plant that stays short and finishes early or are you just messin around. I've crossed weed varieties before and although the crosses were good and exhibited hybrid vigor (a Goal in itself) nothing much had changed. I would think you would have to cross and then backcross and backcross some more.:wall:

I'm sure some of you guys are working on higher THC contents and some of you might be trying to develop a strain that works well medically for something specific like pain or anxiety or what have you. Hopefully someone is working on a variety that fits all our wants and needs but will tolerate half sun and still yield reasonably well. I'm sure were smoking the successes of others who had a specific goal.If this is the breeders corner, what are you cooking up??
:peace::peace:

budup16 I do give you half credit LOL/JK Your first goal is clearly one of a bonehead like myself but your second goal might be a good one. Good luck with that. It's the OLD genes that hold the key.

With all the strains available today online the biggest goal is finding something that you can work with fairly easily in the beginning, lol. All these f1 hybrids I don't consider a good beginning unless you can go back through their lineage and sort some things out in the beginning.
My goal for breeding is more or less breeding for a specific flower type once I have selected my breeding stock and to climatize the strain. Currently working with some of Sannie's crew's breeds: Herijuana already IBL but will breed this to some weaker strains to help improve potency. Escobar's Lady Cane f2 (only f2 in the collection) - This goal is to keep the 3 phenos I have and develop them into individual, not strains but phenos which will breed true in a few years from now. F2s to me are the most fun to work with because of the variety of phenos you can find, but from there it is a long process I have found if done correctly.
So inother words my goal is to select the best phenos from a strain and stablize it and eventually making an IBL which is climatized to 6500 ft above sea level, mold resistence.
In answer to your half sunshine plant Rottedroots, this is just my opinion and I am sure that many will disagree which is fine love to hear of other ways. Most plants today which are grown by breeders already tolerate lower light levels than the not wild but outdoor variety types. I have been growing since 1968 and have seen a huge change in the plants we grow today and one of the most noticeable is their ability to grow in low light. I know it takes some time for a plant to adapt to new enviroments, from past breeding projects I figure that most MJ plants can adapt within a few generations to different surroundings. I have 3 Lady Canes now which have been grown in a barn close to the door but has only seen direct sunlight when I take pictures or after I foliar spray when they are in flower. They are doing just fine with no noticeable difference in size, health or vigor from the ones which are placed in direct sunlight. I think the notion that MJ has to be out in the direct sun is at best a myth which has been carried on much like the flushing wivestale.
Anyway thanks for the thread to express myself.......and you are right anyone with a detailed plan on what you want to do is just lost and has to hope for luck.
Old army expression - Piss poor planning leads to piss poor results - oh so very true

Very cool response Cane. I was initially irritated cause a Pal-O-Mine was showing me his new "Labradoodle". I told my Pal he just spent $500.00 for a MUTT!!! I asked him how many of the pups in the littler looked the same and he said none. I said DUDE!! You bought a GOD DAMM MUTT.
:-?
Many of us boneheads don't realize how difficult it is actually breed something ending up with a better plant than the original. It really never occurred to me that the more strains that become available the harder it will be to isolate traits and lineage. It's like how many times can you mate with your first and second cousins!!
:-?
Your answer regarding partial sun vs. full sun is very interesting. What could you possible attribute that too?? Has there been a conscious effort to do so or is it the result of so much growing being done indoors and we know you can't really compete with the sun when it comes to light. I have always thought of weed as being a full sun plant if you want any density from structure to bud. I wonder if the general consensus is that pot needs less light than it did in the past. It never occurred to me that light requirements were something you could breed for. Damm won't it be slick when they become a shade plant as well. Rock on Bud..

Any other projects in the works?? Anybody? Just NO cockapoo's!

I am certainly no expert in plants, although they are my passion and I fill most of my days working with a large variety of different type of plants. Breeding, cloning and just in general what the hell can I grow here and how will it react. I have avocados now at about 4 feet in the first two years where they said they don't grow at over 3000 ft and I am at 6500 ft. Mango now there is a plant the won't grow here no matter what you do. The MJ in the second and 3rd generation are starting show a bit of an improvement in growth so I lend that to adjustment. Light has to be mostly the same I would think, the genes are in there somewhere waiting for the right signal for them to activate. Indirect lighting has intrigued me for years and the way greenhouses produce such lushous growth with little direct light but plenty of diffused light. My reasoning is that with indirect you have scattered light, fewer and lighter shadows than direct light. I know that most light passes through the plant but it seems to respond better to the diffused.
I would tend to guess that with a more diffused lighting there is less stress to the plant on a daily basis. The plant isn't trying to retain water as much. I am sure that radiant heat can play a major role in this also as the leaves can get extremely hot in direct sun, slowing respiration of the plant. These are just opinions mind you, gathered from lots of reading and trying a few different things over and over again to see what produces what each time. LOL sometimes I might get lazy with a cycle or with my condition not tend to them quite the same each time so I like to run through a few cycles whenever I try something new.
If you check out the journal in my sig you can see some plants that are in my barn close to the door but never see sunlight and their growth and structure I think are better than the ones I blaze in the sun all day (here that means about 8 hours of sun before the rain is here). Ain't fun though working with these plants and learning just how amazingly adoptable they are.

I have an orange growing in Z6 that stays outside all winter long and my Jap. Persimmons, Kiwi and Paw Paw are coming along just fine. I hope your right about diffuse light being sufficient and possibly even better. I will say I have things growing that are supposed to be sun loving and for me do better in the shade and visa versa. Your in this a hell of a lot deeper than me and at the level your messing around at it becomes A LOT like work.
What variety of Mango are you trying? I'm sure there not the awful ones we get in the states but some tasty little neat ones. You got Guava growing too? If your growing and working on as much stuff as you are I gotta imagine that you believe MJ to be one of the easiest non-fickle plants out there BUT one of the most rewarding.

Paw Paws, you gotta love them I haven't them since I sold my farm in N Fla back in 06 or persimmons. The mangos I am or have tried are just the open growing variety here, I have no idea of the species. I usually don't eat the ripe ones but prefer the green with lime and salt. Guava is great up here we have about 12 nice producing trees now and several more on the way, have to give the birds their fair share and the insects down here. We have around last count 10 variety of banana and two platano (plantains in the states) variety. Several other berry bushes which I don't know the name of the locals have several different they call it. I just love plants, fruit, veggies, flowers and of course my girls.
The girls take most of my time right now running a bit bigger cycle than normal but the only way I can get a vacation, get a supply built up for a couple of cancer patients. I still after all these years get nervous and giddy all at the same time everytime I growout a new strain. OMG too much nutes not enough, too much light, not enough the list is on and on but once the 2nd 3rd generations come around then yeah it is pretty much coasting on a cycle. I just try and move my attention around the farm and new strains into cycles of ok it is rooting time and figure out the girls and all the other plants together at the same time, a balancing act if you will.

I'm at the very beginning of my breeding. I'm only 19.

But, I've got some seeds from some pretty good seedy bud from when I lived in Texas. I live in Colorado and have a card now so I can grow, and I have 3 Texas girls going. They've probably had generations of ancestors for 5-50 years throwing genetics around Mexico, and I bet I can find a gem in there.

I am going to flower these fully, and have already made clones. Once they are done I will start with the clones, and pollinate them this time. I'll get Charas (1,000 y/o strain) seeds and grow a male with the Texas girls. Let the male pollinate my Texas girls, and I'll have a bunch of Texas base x Charas seeds. Then I can start breeding those with females from the dispensaries that I can just go buy, and I can start making my own mediocre strains, then eventually get that perfect one. I know it'll take 5-10-20-50 years. But it'll be worth it.

And spreading a bunch of Southern names around the south will help the green movement down there. Like the cops will finally just be like, "Man, this shit is called Texas Cattle Show. Why can't we smoke it in Texas?" (Just an example)

nice thread, im not a breeder or anything but i have always been interested in it. when i do grow i always save seeds from bud that gets me really stoned. so that would be number 1. then it would be down to mold resistance, flowering time, bud/leaf ratio, trich production obviously, and smell/taste. and i wouldnt even want to get into backcrossing, i know it stabalizes traits, but i would rather just freestyle and every year pick the best ones to continue in the process. and i wouldnt keep a mother maybe just a father to collect premium pollen. so i guess i would be breeding very unstable but potent stuff.

My goal is preserve an share elite strains,
Ill use CS to reverse the Elite clones/ female only seeds I get from trades.
Then share the pollen an seeds with amature breeders around the net.
Who will make more an share with their friends.

Mines is to make a strain with smoke properties like pure lavender but with growing qualities of a outdoor commercial strain. (bigger nugs, Less sensitve to mold, bugs, and fertilizers) and no potency loss like alot of these new strains now days. I dont even care about yeild i just hate bud rot and mildew on my perfect nuggets. Right now im trying to cross a purple haze clone that gives amazing buds and grows like a damn weed with my most lavender pheno seed cut i got. The purple haze seems like a super stable strain i superropped it and topped it and now it looks like a natural scrog LOL and it has been handling high nute levels nicely and no bugs or mildew hopefully it buds as nice :p. Hopefully that will get passed onto the lav

My goal is to get my hands on some seeds from some of the old time Puna growers and create a strain like I us to have. They would grow 6 to 8 ft in summer(Hawaii) get a ounce per ft and mold would hardly get them. It would never hermie or get those claws no matter what you did to them. We hiked out hundreds bare rooted back in the 80's. Some of the strains today seem weak. Maybe like we did with dogs too much in breeding. One guy in his late 60's gave me this, he has had it for 20 yr,9-29-11 007.jpg9-29-11 008.jpg so we will see I'm glad winter is coming. Shorter flowering time I grow outside. Aloha

dude, right on. i was already thinking about this and have already started i have f2 growing right now.. breeding a strain in texas and nameing it after it. its deffinately a small step in the green movement as you put it. letting them know that were guna grow no matter what.

A friend of mine grows some amazing Kali Mist that I will eventually get cuttings of. I have two types of mid-grade sativa bag seed, presumably Texas origins. I have tons and tons of each and obviously never really planned to do anything with them. BUT, I got the idea recently that in the future it would be fun to look for a sweet mid-grade male and develop a Kali Mist/Texas field sativa hybrid. :) Get a little more density and mildy "hashy-ness" into the KM. That field sativa has that distinct* taste... would be so much better if it was dried/cured right.

i have a few goals.

1st & foremost is to find the absolute trippiest strain i can that can be made indoor friendly and cross it with something like C99 to make it indoor friendly without the compromises of afghani bred gear. i want to try world of seeds' columbian gold and see if that has any of the real deal magic missing from otherwise potent and moderately trippy strains like haze skunk. an indoor columbian gold that doesn't couchlock & that has the same light floaty feelings & other sensory effects i've never seen in anything else yet is the ultimate

next, i'd like to make short stuff's grapey authentic haze THC profile super cali haze even more compact & indoor friendly. 45 day grape pheno joey weed C99 (or even C99 x LSD) might get something worth keeping in a couple weeks less hopefully. it's not my favorite buzz (if i could make it trippier, i would) but it's really fun and the flavor on top of it makes it special

i'd like to come up with some kind of delicious spicy flavored strain using gear like crushed red pepper tasting kali mist, tart cherry G13 haze x buddha's sister & cinnamon girl phenos of jack herer. KM is one of the most delicious strains to me. i like foods you can actually taste. i always wanted to make a strain i'd call curry. california orange x kali mist was another idea i had back when there were more version of orange around

not that i could realistically pull it off, but i'd like to make a 2.0 version of juicy fruit with sativa seeds' highland thai based tutti fruity full moon that isn't at all stony like juicy fruit was. something along the lines of super cali haze and maybe even with that in the lineage, but tutti fruity instead of grape... a dwarf thai basically that's not just tutti fruity, but TRIPPY.

Share the wealth stay in health!
YEAH BUDDY! that's what im talkin' 'bout! take the greed out of weed and everyone would be smoking better gear! all of THE BEST gear i've smoked that i haven't grown (kali mist, durban poison, haze, super silver haze & something very similar to columbian gold) has always been free and not for sale at any price. i think it's because of hoarding middlemen, but can't be sure. all i know is i'd rather give buds that make you high as a mofo away out of pride than try and get rich quick off selling MORE "me too" cash crapper strains you can't get away from in many places.

now to convert a few thousand more to quality over quantity thinking! that was my plan all along... get some peeps high and wake 'em up to the inferior crap they're paying too much for so they join my boycott. so much for idealism.

right now... my top goal is giving THIS a test drive after really liking the sound of it's super silver haze x CAMBODIAN lineage 7 description as being psychedelic as well as a few positive peeps on their gear besides this video

maybe THIS is pretty effing close to where i wanted to get with my no go mekong hazes. i like the sound of super silver haze better than skunk #1 as that is psychoactive and cambodian is supposed to be really trippy where hazes don't always live up to the claims, though they are still awesome.

i'm putting this on my shopping list. shit! at $7.64 a pop, i'll try 2!

i've been trying some keyword searching at attitude to try and dig up new promising strains and this one really gave me a woody when i tried cambodian. i wish more breeders did crosses like this instead of always screwing their IBLs up with skunk #1, NL#5 or even *cringe* afghani. i've never been particularly interested in SSH because of the reports i've read of couchlock, but squirt that up in some cambodian poo and... yeah... now you got my attention!

anyone else wanna see that get tested?
